The final film score of Jerry Goldsmith’s legendary career gets a long-awaited CD Club treatment: Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) reunited Goldsmith with director Joe Dante (Gremlins, Innerspace, Matinee) for an insane musical journey befitting Warner Bros.’ classic cartoon characters, with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck starring in a live-action/animation hybrid alongside human characters played by Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, Timothy Dalton and Steve Martin.
The globetrotting adventure demanded one of Goldsmith’s zaniest scores ever, a sort of indescribable combination of slapstick, action and whimsy that lurches from high-energy symphonic chases to pop-influenced flourishes to Carl Stalling-styled “Mickey Mousing.” All of it has Goldsmith’s effortlessly melodic touch, with the special brand of left-field inspiration that always accompanied his work for Dante.
Previously released by Varèse Sarabande at the time of the movie, this comprehensive 2CD set features not only Goldsmith’s vastly expanded score, but rewrites and additional music by John Debney, Cameron Patrick and a handful of others—as well as alternates and outtakes by Goldsmith and the complete 2003 album program. Packaging features new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger (incorporating new interviews with Dante, Debney and Patrick) and Goldsmith’s longtime friend and recording engineer, Bruce Botnick.

So, they decided to pass on the John Frizzell cue?
BS: But this “mature” JohnFrizzell also took part in scoring Looney Tunes:Back in Action. What part did you create? Did youmeet Goldsmith and Debney?
JF: Idid the beginning of the film, a six minute scene startingthe road-runner. Unfortunately, I couldn't meet Goldsmith or Debney,because they worked on it later than me.

Frizzel’s involvement on this is news to me! He was on a Dante film before Goldsmith was? Weird...maybe his music was replaced, and wasn’t among the elements Varese had access to?

I was involved in this project and they had the cue sheets and there was NO cue credited to John Frizzell. So those cures were either replaced or he ghost wrote them for someone else, but there was NO John Frizzell credited cue on the cue sheet. That is fact!
There was a short film called THE WHIZARD OF OW that was included in the DVD release of LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION as a special feature and that short was scored by John Frizzell and the Road Runner was in it. It MAY have been shown in theaters before they ran LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION, so there is the John Frizzell connection. This was not part of LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION so it was not included. Varese Sarabande was ONLY allowed to release music from LOONEY TUNES as Varese has that in perpetuity as most know. To release this extra short film music would have been another contract with Warners and possibly a $15,000 fee or more.

It MAY have been shown in theaters before they ran LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION, so there is the John Frizzell connection. This was not part of LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION so it was not included.
Maybe at the time of Frizzell's involvement the Road Runner short was envisioned as actually opening Dante's LOONEY TUNES BACK IN ACTION, just as the earlier WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT began with a fabricated cartoon featuring that fictitious character. But my theatrical viewing of LOONEY TUNES in December 2003 definitely went from a few trailers straight to the feature, with no short before or after.
And since that Road Runner film is a DVD bonus not attached to the head of Dante's feature, there's the reason not to wonder why Varese didn't find it necessary to include that Frizzell score on this CD release. It's a different composer's work for an entirely separate film, even if not originally intended as such.

I'd never heard of Whizzard of Ow before, so I Googled it and found it on Dailymotion for those curious:

I thought it was a lot of fun and it did something a little different (the magic angle) with the Coyote/Road Runner formula, yet felt like a very faithful "update" (at one point Coyote uses a cell phone).
It pretty clearly is completely independent of and unrelated to Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and it certainly wouldn't have made sense for Varese to pay $15,000 to license this short six minutes of John Frizzell score for inclusion on this release, however delightful it is. Not sure it's something I personally feel the need to enjoy out of context anyway (in comparison to the Goldsmith, which I definitely do). One interesting slight connection musically to the Goldsmith score: in his own different way, Frizzell evokes the theremin a couple times (Goldsmith did particularly in his "Area 52" cue). It was neat but I am sure a complete coincidence.
Thanks to Justin, Peter, JSDouglas, and Steven Lloyd for bringing up this fun short though, or I probably never would have sought it out!
