LEGAL EAGLES
Music Composed and Conducted by ELMER BERNSTEIN
INTRADA ISC 446

Intrada's latest release features Elmer Bernstein's score to the 1986 mystery/romance/thriller Legal Eagles. Continuing his fruitful relationship with director Ivan Reitman (including collaborations on Animal House and Ghostbusters), Legal Eagles would be the last time the two worked together. The score for their last teaming is a charming one, with a warm, playful main theme. Yet don't be deceived: as with any part thriller, there is also suspense and action, as well as a strained, almost tortured theme for Chelsea Reardon. In many respects the score harkens back to his work in the '60s.

The album features the complete program released by MCA Records back in 1986 from source elements stored in the UMG vaults in excellent condition.

In the film, Robert Redford plays a dedicated lawyer in line for the top job as New York City’s District Attorney. Divorced but enjoying a great relationship with his precocious daughter, he finds his life turned upside down by two quite different women — Laura Kelly, an eccentric defense attorney notorious for once putting a dog on the witness stand; and her client Chelsea Deardon, a beautiful yet troubled performance artist convinced that her artist father was murdered by associates who stole his paintings but claimed they were destroyed in a fire. Logan finds himself attracted to both women, while the trio finds their lives in danger as they uncover a decades-old criminal conspiracy.

Which announcement will win, SBD or Tacks? I choose SBD, but my posts have the medusa touch, sorry.

This is the kind of 1980s movie I would never be tempted to see back in the day (just look at the cover), but the music has some appeal (especially Strange Birthday)...and I doubt the LP sounded as flawless as the streaming mp3 samples on computer speakers, let alone the CD thru a stereo.

Why not the complete score?

Why not the complete score?

Because they’ll have you buy this first then release the complete score in about a year or so.

Nah, give it six months.

Hahaha.

But, seriously, why not a complete score? Lost tapes? Not much music unreleased?

Sounds like a wonderful Elmer score that I will enjoy, it's a new one for me!

Why not the complete score?

Yavar gave a succinct response to this very question in another thread:

"I think Intrada licensed the LP recording from Universal Music Group, which is a different entity at this point from Universal Pictures which distributed the film. If the film recording survives it would require separate licensing, and maybe/hopefully that'll happen some day."

Hmmm, interesting. I have never even heard OF this Bernstein effort before (I read it as IRON EAGLE at first, LOL!). Nice to see that it's just a straight album re-issue. Will give this a shot.

Iron Eagle was a better movie.

Well, what's missing that matters exactly from the album?

God knows how long it took INTRADA to clear the album music and what it cost.

Just remember the old saying "Dying is Easy, COMEDY IS HARD"

Comedy overall aren't the biggest sellers to start with and the fact they got this out is rather amazing at this point.

Looking forward to picking it up myself.

I watched the film again just over a year ago and commented re: the score ... The TV satellite broadcast boasted excellent w/s image and sound ... allowing me to enjoy Elmer Bernstein's score. I used to have a cassette tape recording, long gone, and I'd forgotten how good this one is.

I'd like to have a copy of this but I'm not keen on paying the price of shipping, etc. I shall ponder on the matter ... smile
Mitch

Edit: having now viewed the track listing I'm less inclined to spend the money ... the vocals, I recall, are awful (I left them off my old cassette recording) and the Steppenwolf song is already in my collection, courtesy of Star Trek: First Contact

I watched (and enjoyed) this film a year or so ago and remember being disappointed that it wasn't available, as it was a nice score.

Was similarly disappointed last night when I watched the film BRAINSCAN and discovered George s Clinton's decent score was unavailable.

Hmmm... they were able to get clearances for a couple songs but not Love Touch.

This is an identical track list to the original LP program as far as I can see.

This is a charming score - and for those of you who've never even heard of it, the samples on the Intrada store provide ample evidence! I'm glad I have it on LP so I can save money for a release of a score I don't have in any format. But if you don't have it, buy this CD. Hey, you can't really go wrong with Elmer!... smile

I’m sort of tired of hearing just how amazing every release is. Come on enough. He says what’s missing that matters? For real, just wait, this will get released in complete form and then it’ll be “this is such a miracle!” Yada, yada, yada.
