SEASON 1:

A one-season lived series from 1971 that starred Glenn Ford.

The catchy memorable theme is by Henry Mancini.

If I don't mention an episode, that means it had no credited composer.

Please Note: I took the word of IMDb on a small number of composer credits. Even though about 99% of them were done myself using the end credits of episodes, some may be wrong and there is no composer credited (as is the case with one later in this thread). I'm not going to double check everything.

Attention readers: I am implementing a new system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, the lack of an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes. Anything in ( ) are just notes to the arrow and you need not bother with that.

    Hey Justin,

Thanks very much for doing this series. Had no idea Mancini actually scored a complete episode though was aware of a Fox session he did for "Company Town" (probably just theme variations as it was only a three-hour session). Do you know if "The Armageddon Contract" was early on in the production? I know it's considered one of the best eps of "Cade's County."

    Anyway, thanks again.

I assumed "The Armageddon Contract" was probably originally going to be the pilot, but shuffled around. While it has happened before on series, usually the composer who provides the theme, does the pilot and is never heard from again.

I noticed the theme was the full version (it's edited in subsequent shows). Also, a portion of Cade's fight with Shat's character in the computer room is included in the main title. Couldn't see all of the end credits (because of its being blocked by windows for two more episodes), but it looks like this is ep 101 (usually indicating pilot show). Like how this score combines HM's late 50's "Peter Gunn" style low flutes with modern keyboards and "Nightwing" cluster brass. No question that it's his score. Also, Mariette Hartley looks quite sexy with her shoulder-length hair!

Very apt he should turn up on this show considering Cade's County co-creator Rick Husky went on to create (drumroll) T.J. Hooker.

I finally found a way around those damn boxes over the end credits; I just go to a website that will download the episode, it'll upload the episode to a temp page and I can play it from there without the boxes and not even have to download it. Came in handy to grab Mancini's screen credit for when I make a suite of the episode one day.

    Hey Justin,

Just watched "Company Town" and it is definitely Mancini's music as a lot of what's in "The Armageddon Contract" also appears in this episode's score. Though Armageddon was show 101 it was, I believe, the seventh show broadcast. Usually episodes would be scored in production order, but there have been exceptions (sometimes because of special effects being delayed as was the case with ST: TOS's "The Corbomite Manuever"). As I mentioned before, the one OM (orchestra manager) report I could find for him on the series was listed as "Company Town." The episode also seems to include some cues that I don't recall from "Armageddon." My guess is he did a partial on one or the other with Lionel Newman probably conducting the session (for the partial score).

Interesting. I wonder if there were any other partials. Oh well -- some label will have to tackle this some day. About fifty years after I'm dead.

Rethinking it, guessing that Newman conducted "Armageddon," Mancini, the partial for "Company Town" (which contains cues not recorded for "Armageddon"). If The former was listed as show 101 this makes sense. Of course, Company Town could have been one of the early shows and simply scored before "Armageddon."

I recall The Company Town session was in July 1971. So, if Armageddon was the pilot it would have to been scored much earlier (maybe February or March).

Where are you finding orchestra manager reports? Is that something online I can search, or just something you happen to have access to or know a guy who does?

I got these from the AFM Local 47 (LA) Archives Dept. as I was doing research on studio musicians of the era, a project I eventually (and sadly) abandoned after learning someone else was doing something similar. I found almost everything I wanted with the exception of Desilu Productions (ST: TOS S1-2, The Lucy Show S4-6, Mission: Impossible S1-2, first season of Mannix).

    Finishing SEASON 1:

    "Jessie"
    NO COMPOSER CREDITED
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc9I40HKXEs

I covered the episode because at the time there were boxes over the credits and I hadnt' figured a way around it and thought there might be a composer name under it. So, rather than throw away what I wasted my time on, here are the track-job highlights (perhaps there is some original uncredited scoring in here).

    Highlights:
  • 1:08 in.^
  • 11:10 in.
  • 15:52 in.^
  • 18:38 in.

    Highlights:

  • 8:26 in.^

  • 20:33 in. And the cue after the commercial break.^(second)
  • 30:50 in.^(parts)
  • 37:50 in. Joining a cue already in progress.^
  • 40:00 in. Almost eight minutes long.^

IMDb had Tom Scott down as the composer, so I covered it, but upon double checking the credits, I found no composer was credited. I decided to keep it here anyway just incase it's an uncredited effort and somebody knew that when submitting it to IMDb.

    "The Fake"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJvQ2AYoZ6Q

I only note this episode that has no composer credited, because of that kick-ass funky cue that opens it. If that's not tracked from a prior episode, then I got to know where it's from.

(Note to Me: 0:05, 10:27, 13:15, 41:26; for those curious, those are all the cues I liked and I plan to go back through credited composer episodes and see find what episodes they are from, if possible)

    "The Witness"

Justin: Here's the CC scoring dates I have (looks like six episodes received original scoring):

    All 1971:

    7/26 - F101 "Company Town" (Mancini)
    8/9 - F102 "Crisscross" (Tatro)
    8/16 - F103 "Safe Deposit" (Scott)
8/30 - F106 - "Homecoming" AND Library (cond. Tatro, Newman)
    9/20 - F108 - "Violent Echo" (Tatro)
    10/19 - F111 - "A Gun For Billy" (Scott)

I thought for sure "Armageddon" was listed as F101. Hmm...

Based on this, Mancini scored "Company Town," Newman likely tracking "Armageddon" with "Company Town" and other music (library from Mancini, music from non-HM scored segments).

Anyway, that's what I could find.

It's very helpful, the info' you provided, Broughtfan. Now that I know some of "The Armageddon Contract" was tracked into "Company Town", I may be able to Frankenstein parts of cues from "Company Town" that have no SFX/FX or less SFX/FX than the ones in "The Armageddon Contract", to make cleaner final versions. :-)

    EDIT:
Monday when I post the ASCAP and BMI extra composers, you'll note Lionel Newman amongst them.

Mancini would have received credit for "Armageddon" if the episode contained 50% or more of his music (which it apparently does).

Usually the pilot establishes something about character origins. With this show it's possible there was simply no pilot, that the series went straight into production without a "this is how it all started" show (and Glenn Ford was a bonafide film star, so I could understand this happening).

    Hey Justin,

"Armageddon Contract" is a "glue job," with cues from "Company Town", "CrissCross," "Safe Deposit." The teaser cue is Scott's teaser from "Safe Deposit" with the act-one credits written by Tatro for CrissCross (an arrangement of Mancini's MT theme). The big cue at the end is largely taken from the teaser and an act-out cue from "Company Town" (and is Mancini's music). CrissCross also has some tracked stuff from "Company Town" (which, being the first episode produced, is likely the only episode scored top-to-bottom by the credited composer).

    So, imdB is wrong.
