I hated Hugo Montenegro's cover of The Good The Bad & The Ugly, it was a hit in the UK, I think it got further up the charts than Morricone's original. A lot of the time the majority don't get it right.

Montenegro got the better marketing guys in the Anglo-Saxon world. That's why.

His GBU take is really terrible, IMO.

Of all film themes, the one I believe has been murdered most often is Lara's Theme from DOCTOR ZHIVAGO. The list is endless. As another example, here's Ray Conniff's disco version.

Not only is there a pointless rock backbeat to this great track....but having to hear it looping for 15+ minutes near daily for the past few weeks has been pretty grueling....

It's Percy Faith's turn.

Which one?

Summer Place, of course.

To say, the versions are BAD, might be unfair.

But here they are anyway.

The original 1959 top-hit cover version by Faith:

Weekly Chart (1960) with peak position
Canada (CHUM Hit Parade) 4
New Zealand (Lever Hit Parade) 2
UK Singles (OCC) 2
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 1

Year-end charts (1960)
US Billboard Hot 100 1

All-time Chart (1958–2018)
US Billboard Hot 100 23

Faith's version with lyrics & chorus:

Finally, Percy went full disco in 1976, one of his last recordings before he died.
Too bad, Max wasn't there to enjoy it.

Summer Place '76 (The Theme From "A Summer Place")

Eh. It’s got a beat and you can dance to it.

wink

This is quite good compared to another cover of this - at least it's not a case of Halt! Hugo's there.

No disrespect to Mr M - some of his own compositions are sensational.

Jeannie springs to mind - shame he couldn't bottle that magic and put it into his cover versions

Regards

CC

Technically speaking, it's a re-mix of the original version and not a cover version.

But I agree, I find it BAD, too.
