Quartet Records presents a 50th-anniversary remastered edition of the innovative, cult-classic score by Ennio Morricone, a key work which launched one of the composer’s best known themes.

Directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz in 1971, MADDALENA is a one-off venture of the Polish director into the territory of Italian cinema. Starring Lisa Gastoni as the title character and Eric Woofe as the priest whose faith she tests, the movie is an erotic drama focused on poetic sex scenes, psychedelic flashbacks and deviant erotic games all mixed into a beautiful fever dream.

MADDALENA is a relatively obscure entry in the Morricone filmography despite the importance of launching “Chi mai,” one of the composer best-known cues and famous worldwide a decade later when it was re-used in the film LE PROFESSIONEL. While the score itself is more psychedelic with lots of percussion, vocalization and experimentation, the self-contained “Chi mai” turned out to be an overnight success that was eventually turned into a song as well—eventually recorded in multiple languages.

Previously released several times on CD by Saimel in Spain and Rambling Records in Japan, this new edition features the original album program produced by Morricone himself for the General Music LP, followed by bonus tracks and alternate versions, including both film and single versions of “Chi mai” plus vocal versions by Lisa Gastoni. The version recorded by Morricone for the maxi-single “Disco 78” appears at the end of the program.

This anniversary edition, produced by Claudio Fuiano, has been rebuilt and mastered by Chris Malone from recently discovered first-generation album master tapes. The full-color booklet includes in-depth liner notes by Gergely Hubai, discussing in detail the film and score.

Same program, but don't underestimate the magic touch of Chris Malone working with first-generation master tapes! Between that and the new liner notes, I think this will be worth the upgrade for fans.

Why do you always have to be the first person to post a negative put-down on as many new release threads as possible?!! "No stereo no sale" or "mono no thanks."
The whole forum takes the piss out of you for this and you still cant stop.

Well, I for one am extremely happy about this. I don't have any of the previous releases of this score. I'm only now, in my dotage, beginning to pick up some of the previously-released Morricones. And I'll still never get everything on my wants list, not in my lifetime.

Neither have I. I have a couple of tracks from this score here and there on Morricone compilations, but not the actual score album. So yep, I'm happy to see this re-released.

I've bought MADDALENA three times already wink but I can honestly say that the most recent release before & with the same tracks as this one has been the one I definitely find the most listenable version so far. So my recommendation is to get today's Quartet edition if you haven't got the Saimel 3998929 yet, and give the previous program (https://www.discogs.com/de/release/5442002-Ennio-Morricone-Maddalena-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack) order a try with this new release.

What can I say? Whenever someone praises Morricone's theme to LE PROFESSIONNEL or THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, which hit #1 on the record charts, they are talking about this theme. Few tunes by any composer have had such an afterlife. This is the original.

True Henry.
The original 45rpm single i had with chi mai on a side maddalena on b side was just plain cover, but the Dongaman has an LP yellow picture cover with Lloyd George on the front. Jammy git lol

Here's Roy's one

There clearly was a colour cover single

Think this was my 45 with plain paper cover.
