The joint albums and performances by the legendary film composer John Williams and the star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter are undoubtedly among the highlights of recent years. This album is the latest in a longstanding friendship and collaboration between the world's acclaimed artists: Mutter performs John Williams' Violin Concerto No. 2, which the composer wrote for her.

Williams says of his Violin Concerto: “For me, this piece is primarily about Anne-Sophie Mutter and about the violin as a masterpiece of the art of violin making. (...) Ultimately, this great artist herself became my inspiration and driving force.” The present recording for Deutsche Grammophon, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Williams himself, was written shortly after the world premiere of the Second Violin Concerto in Tanglewood in July 2021.

The Boston Globe wrote, "Even in this premiere, Mutter carried the solo like an old friend, shaping every phrase with purpose and panache." The lyrical and deeply personal concerto follows the album with three fantastic encores: Popular film themes from Williams, including from Star Wars and Indiana Jones, all of which he has completely re-arranged for Anne-Sophie Mutter. The expressiveness of Mutter's playing is reflected in various details of the violin concerto, but also in the beautiful film melodies, as is her virtuoso brilliance and the lyrical warmth of her violin tone.

Track listing:

Violin Concerto No. 2
1 I. Prologue (Violin Concerto No. 2)
2 II. Rounds (Violin Concerto No. 2)
3 III. Dactyls (Violin Concerto No. 2)
4 IV. Epilogue (Violin Concerto No. 2)

5 Theme (From "The Long Goodbye")
6 Han Solo and the Princess (From "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back")
7 Marion's Theme (From "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark")

It'll be hard to wait until June for this.

So now we have three versions of "Han Solo And The Princess" apart from the original soundtrack.

Yes, but it is the one and only recording of "Han Solo and the Princess" (for violin & orchestra).

Robert Ziegler has conducted the new Han Solo & The Princess suite on a recent(ish) Sony STAR WARS music compilation CD*, but yes, this will be the first under Jay Dubya's baton and with the violin emphasis.
This looks like a great CD.
Can't wait to buy it.
I'd love a Bits N Bobs CD from DG, wherein they gather up some of his great, unrecorded pieces and commissions like his President's pieces, TV themes/spots and DEAR BASKETBALL.

Thinking back, that 1st Violin Concerto by John Williams (Varese LP, LSO under Slatkin) was my first ever classical album purchase (I can't count THE PLANETS which I nicked from my older brother's collection).
Once I'd confirmed the fact it was MY John Williams and not the guitarist or some other JW, I grabbed it from a local record shop (a classical music shop at the bottom of Bold Street in Liverpool - the name of which eludes me - that also had a decent soundtrack section).
It certainly took some time for me to 'get it' as the music was certainly less immediate or thematic.
But 'get it' I did and I dare say it opened my mind up to more challenging music away from my beloved film scores.
I never truly warmed to the 1st movement, but the 2nd and 3rd have enough 'John Williams' in them for me to admire.
It's probably still my favourite non-score John Williams composition that I have (or have heard).

kEv, was it called penny lane records, on the left. On the right was Waterstones, which had a large classical section.

Ahhhhh, thanks Day.
It was Waterstones then, the big one on the right.
I remember them having a lot of early Varese and TER albums in their soundtrack section.
I bought things like DON'T LOOK NOW and TOURIST TRAP and THE HOWLING and PIRANHA (by Pino Donaggio) from them.
I always remember seeing PRANKS by Christopher Young on LP in there and never, ever picking it up (despite liking other early scores by Young).
Good Times.

Deutsch Gramophone is offering the CD signed by Anne-Sophie Mutter exclusively through their own website. I really, really want to get one of these and have been trying to order it since yesterday, but I keep getting an error message every time I try to pay. I'm not sure why I can't order it. I live in the US and have used every browser I can think of, but I keep getting the same error message.

I really want to get one of the signed copies. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help me? I would gladly pay all of the costs up front if someone would order it and ship it to me when it is released. If you can help, please send a message to the email address in my profile. Many thanks!

This, desperately!

I know he revised it over the years and there have been subsequent performances and releases of it, but for me, nothing will ever beat Leonard Slatkin conducting the LSO and featuring Mark Peskanov...

There's some WITCHES OF EASTWICK during the final movement.

Just brilliant!

So why wait until June if you can have it in March? smile

Edit: oh I see, the date in the german version of the site indicates June indeed. My mistake.

Right at the point of trying to pay. No matter what payment option I choose, I get an error message. It lets me add it to my cart, I have an account set up. It just won't let me pay.

Hi Scotty Boy,

I want this CD too, going to order it today. I live in the Netherlands, I could order it for you if you could deal with the shipping costs? It's only signed by A.S.M, not by Williams (as you certainly have seen). I'll drop you a mail, hope you'll see it soon.

Greetings,
Maarten van Herpt

That sounds like a cache or cookie error to me? Try deleting that in your browser (or the files themselves if you know where your cache is) and try again.

EDIT: Maarten slides in for the win. Nevermind me.

I’m in the US and was able to order an autographed version on the DG website using Safari, however I could not complete the order with my credit card, but it went through using PayPal.

Aha! Success! Clearing cookies and cache seems to have worked and I was able to place the order. Thanks for the help.

The Shipping charges pretty much kill this for USA buyers.

I've ordered stuff from Decca Store in UK and they've always been reasonable at least...
