There have been 6 so far, with a two-parter to come in the near future.
Brian DePalma got the ball rolling in 1996, with his big, bulky reboot feature.
John Woo followed up, with slo-mo and doves.
JJ rebooted the reboot, as is his wont, before Brad Bird continued the high-jinks.
Then Chris McQuarrie took over the reigns and has been in control ever since.
Score-wise, Danny Elfman (replacing Alan Silvestri) produced a brooding, noodling stealthy score, which had some high points, but has never been a favourite of mine by him.
Zimmer came next, with his trademark sound n synths, before Michael Giacchino delivered a two-fer for A(brams) & B(ird).
Joe Kraemer gave forth a spectacular retro-orchestral Tour De FRANCE for film number 5, before a fall-out on Fall Out led to the anti-Christ getting the gig for 6 (and seems to be in the driving seat for the next two films...sigh).
So, my rating is thus...
1 = MI5 ROGUE NATION (Joe Kraemer) - fantastic/thrilling orchestral bombast in a 60s/70s sound style.
2 = MI3 (Michael Giacchino) - another exciting orchestral effort, with great symphonic ostinato tracks and tense suspense cues.
3 = MI4 GHOST PROTOCOL (MG) - more of the above, with some Russian choir for added effect.
4 = MI (Danny Elfman) - low-key, tense, brooding stuff from DE, which does get pretty damned exciting towards the end, but is all a bit too little/too late for me.
5 = MI2 - I remember some okay tracks from the Zimmer score, including a nice guitar Love theme (?), but I'm not that well familiar with the score or film overall (saw it once...didn't like it).

I'm gonna leave it there, cos I hated the Balfe effort when I watched the film (it actually distracted me and ruined some scenes while I was sat in the cinema).

So, what are your ratings?

I like...

1 - Elfman
4 - Giacchino
6 - Balfe

And not the others!

I agree with your rankings, putting the Balfe score in last place. A real shame, considering Kramer brought the fire with his one outing. "The A400" is likely the best cue in the series. But Fallout is probably the best film in the series.

I'd also add that the MI2 score has some lovely interpretations on one of the Hans Zimmer concert albums. They drop all the action cues and its just spanish guitar and orchestra. I was surprised how much I liked it.

I pretty much agree with your ranking, Kev! But to be fair I haven’t heard the expanded version of the Elfman…

I enjoyed them in the context of the movie, but have not given them a listen as music.

Only ever saw the first one, and apart from the nods to Schifrin's theme I don't remember a jot of Elfman's score.

So definitely a mission: impossible.

I have only seen/heard 2, 3 and 4.

I loved Zimmer's score for 2, especially the tracks Injection and Hijack.

As expected, I did not enjoy Giacchino's scores for 3 and 4.

Kraemer's ! Not only a fantastic MI score, it would also make for a terrific Bond-score !

Zimmer's 2 is in a class of its own for me. By far the best, most enjoyable listening experience. The only M:I score I really listen to.

Elfman's first was always a frustration point for me. I consider it an important turning point in his "sound evolution" -- the one that got him all caught up in dense, contrapuntal writing. But I always had trouble getting into it on an enjoyment level. I do like it slightly better these days, but it's not anywhere near Zimmer's level for me.

The Balfe and Kraemer, I could give or take. The Giacchinos, I want to strangle to death.

Wasnt Zimmer's MI2 score released in full on vinyl? Will we ever get it on cd?

The complete score?

No, the regular one. You'd have to talk to others about the complete business.

Correct.

I’ve seen your replies about that for years, but never saw your reason for it. Nothing wrong with it, and I respect your opinion, I’m just curious. If you explained that before other than what was put out is enough or it’s what I like I missed it. If you don’t want to explain it again that’s cool too. Me, I’m a completist and I’m that guy who loves seeing deleted and expanded scenes from films too. I like seeing or hearing in this case everything the filmmakers or composers did. Ideas etc. to better appreciate their vision or see where they were going with their story or their music. For scores I often find there’s a lot of little things or sequences that are really good that get left off original releases. Best example for me is the Helicopter Rescue from Superman The Movie. Guess I’m way off topic. Sorry.

For me it’s:

Rogue Nation
Ghost Protocol
The Original
Fallout
MI:2 (just the love theme and action stuff)
MI:3

I love all the Mission Impossible movie scores (and the TV series too!) and listen to them often, specifically via a custom compilation I crafted. I might be the outlier here who's favorites of the six scores are Giacchino's MI3 and 4. I love his hyperactive, ostinato-driven action acrobatics, such as in the cues "Bridge Battle" and "Out for a Run". I also love the techno inspired cues for the India sequences in "Ghost Protocol".

Elfman's and Zimmer's scores would be next, followed then by "Rogue Nation" and "Fallout". With the Elfman score, I find the opening sequence cues and then all the climactic train cues to be the most engaging, while the middle section kind of sags a bit. Zimmer's rock-infused and Spanish-laden MI2 score is a blast to listen to, especially when driving! smile
