Yesterday the Home Theater United podcast had an interview with George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive Collection, and I had asked him a question on the possibility of a Criterion Collection edition of SUPERMAN, which I have been hoping for the past 6 years. My question was partially answered, and although the title was not actually mentioned on the podcast, his reply did imply that many surprises with WB from Criterion are on the horizon in terms of “contemporary” films, so it is possible SUPERMAN could be one of those titles, and that it may very well be coming soon, seeing that next year will be the film’s 45th Anniversary, and if such a release were to happen an isolated score track could well be included as it was with previous Blu ray releases. But in any event, this may be the closest we have come to finally making a Criterion Collection of SUPERMAN a reality. We will see. Mike Matessino, are you listening? Hopefully you’ll be involved in the project, and if it is indeed in the works and you are involved, them mum may be the word until it is officially announced. So cross your fingers and look up to the skies! The podcast can be accessed at: https://www.hometheaterunited.com/e/episode-39-what-s-cooking-at-warner-archive-collection-with-mr-george-feltenstein/

What exactly are you hoping for with a Criterion version of Superman? Good question. Although I cannot speak for Jim Bowers & Jay Towers (Superman historians and hosts of the CapedWonder Superman Podcast), Bill Williams (another Superman historian), and Mike Matessino (all of whom I know really well), I can say there is a wealth of material related to SUPERMAN (publicity materials, additional outtakes, and even radio & TV spots and theatrical trailers that have never been released on home video)—some of this material is curated by Bowers himself for his web site, capedwonder.com . There is also an audio commentary for the 3-hour TV version Bowers and Towers recorded that can be utilized for a potential Criterion edition (and by the way, this commentary is available on the Caped Wonder.com web site). And of course, an opportunity to utilize an isolated score track for the TV cut (including the dialed-out musical cues). So there is indeed more material out there that one can hope for in a Criterion edition of SUPERMAN. The next call, of course, is up to the powers that be at Criterion and WB.

What exactly are you hoping for with a Criterion version of Superman? The 4K version has inaccurate color grading, so that's one possible improvement. I'd also want the original theatrical cut.

Can they digitally fix his sup outfit so it has the correct shade of blue? Didn't they do this decades ago for the Blu Rays? His costume hasn't been green in years.
