I saw STARCRASH on the BIG screen this past Sunday here in Los Angeles. A brilliant film. With a brilliant John Barry score. Now if only I can find the soundtrack. Any ideas? Any thoughts on said score or said masterwork of a film?

Well, there's a used copy for sale at amazon.com for $99.95, but that seems a tad overpriced; the last one sold on eBay went for about $50. Needless to say, it's quite a rarity.

You thought Star Crash was a good film? Yikes!

Personally I thought Star Crash to be the worst film Barry was ever involved in. Even worse than Night Games and Howard The Duck. Well, I suppose I can enjoy it in a cheesy kind of way - as a film to laugh at due to its hilarious badness. It kind of knows it's bad, and plays up to it. Yeah, I can enjoy that.

The film is a rarity on VHS, there is a French DVD of the movie coupled with a recently made sequel, Starcrash 2.

As to the score: I feel the score is desperately let down by the thoughtless, childish main theme and a very dull love theme for Stella Starr. Barry was most definitely not engaged with this film on any level. It's like, "for goodness sake, let's just write something quick and get this piece of crap out of the way". I always skip those tracks. However, the internal cues get more interesting, a few have some nice Moonraker-isms.

Anyway - as a major Barry fan I'm always pleased to meet someone who loves a Barry score!

The Silva Screen CD is rare now but appears on E-bay from time to time. It is paired with Until September.

Interesting to note is that the CD is sequenced differently from the original LP and one track is a different version to the same track on the LP. I'd love to see the LP programme released.

Cheers

FYI,

The SILVA contains EVERYTHING that appeared on the LP, it does have a slightly different runing order that as I recall was pretty close to film order.

I think the cue your talking about was damaged on the master tape we had to work from and we used a portion of another cue that contained the exact same passage with the drum machine either mixed either softer or louder to replace the damaged section, whatever the case, it worked and the cue appears in the complete form on the CD.

I find the score to be a nice cross polination of the galloping romanticism that is ROBIN AND MARIAN and the brooding and floating "Space March" of MOONRAKER.

I believe the makers of STARCRASH knew what they were doing. They were making a film that was meant to be FUN. Barry is in on the fun but he is also at times using his score to elevate the film to a level of surrealist and Kubrickian intensity and flavor.

Admit it. This film and its score are tasty. Barry is in the kitchen and he preparing a wildly spirited meal. Enjoy!

Solid.

Word.

STARCRASH would make for a brilliant FSM release BTW...

or

Any chance of SIlva re-releasing this?

This has to be the first time anybody, ever, anywhere, has compared Starcrash to Kubrick! What next, Orson Welles' Citizen Humanoid???

LOLsmile Funny thread!

Sracrash is a great fun score and with the unlikely pairing with Until September (a gorgeous score) it makes for a good listen.

The same director (can't remember his name but it's a pseudonym anyway) also directed HERCULES starring LOU FERRIGNO (of Incredible Hulk / Pumping Iron fame), a film I would love to own on DVD, I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw it (it's NOT a comedy by the waywink).

The score by Pino Donaggio is VERY good.

Especially anything with David Hasselhoff. Caroline Munro was intersting to look at...poor Christopher Plummer slumming through this one - he's had better.

Cheesy special effects. Starlog did a big article on this movie when it was released, as if it was the next big thing. Of course, it was competing with ALIEN that summer. Well, we know which one has been remembered and which one all but forgotten.

I've never had the pleasure (?) of seeing the actual movie (I would love to though, it sounds hilarious!) but add me to the list of people who enjoy the score immensely, daft and cheesy though it mostly is. Let's face it, there's no such thing as a completely worthless John Barry score - the man is too much of a genius! smile

The CD does go for reasonable prices on Ebay from time to time and is well worth seeking out, for both STARCRASH and UNTIL SEPTEMBER (which, as Timmer said, is really beautiful).

If you could, please, define reasonable. $99.00 on Amazon and a recent eBay auction of $50.00 plus shipping did not seem reasonable to me but perhaps that is a deal considering this score's inavailability.

Your thoughts on the genius of STARCRASH?

Well, personally I wouldn't baulk at paying $40-50 (if I was feeling flush at the time) for a CD I really wanted that was otherwise unavailable. But $99 is very steep, I agree... All subjective of course.

As for the genius of STARCRASH, I think you've said it all better than I can! wink

Well, at least it didn't have a robot dog that vrapped oil like The Humanoid I suppose.... Anyone ever see Yor, the Hunter from the Future - great tongue in cheek John Scott score, movie that couldn't even afford a full mock-Darth Vader costume (or any sort of costume for the hero, though I understand the ladies like it :-)...

big grin big grin big grin I don't know about embracing
STARCRASH, but I'd sure like to embrace
Caroline Munro! Mmmmmmmm! I always thought
she was one of the most lustful British
babes - ever. Silly (but fun) movie.
John Barry's score is equally fun.

20+ years of gravity may change that opinion if you see her nowadays (Vikki has just thumped me for typing something so sexist!)

Den,

If only you could be so lucky.

Ms. Munro, from her Imperial Battleship, has been able to halt the flow time. She is gold. As is STARCRASH.

The soundtrack for this film has been found albeit in the form of a scratchy LP!

The glory still flows from said crackle grooves!

STARCRASH is life itself.

While not Barry's best-known or best-loved score, there is no autopilot skimping with STARCRASH.

Along with the aforemetioned ROBIN AND MARIAN and BLACK HOLE moments, I have also found some very DIAMONDS ARS FOREVER and KING KONG moments.

This score deserves to be heard.

Along with KONG, STARCRASH deserves a loving re-release.

Is anyone with me?

Please be with me.

It is cold and lonely in outer space...
