Why has Colin Towns never become a big name composer (or even a small name one)? How did he get involved with SPACE TRUCKERS? Was it some tax stipulation given the movie was made in Ireland?

Anyone like the score or have any info and opinions?

Afraid I don't know but I do like Colin Towns work, more than once I've watched a documentary or drama and noticed some great music, later to find Towns name in the credits. I even e-mailed him once on the availability of an excellent docu score he did about Bluebird ( Donald Campbell's tragic demise in a speed record breaking power boat ), the reply was good and polite though disappointing ( no availability.....promo or otherwise ).

Towns is very talented and far better than some of the A-list hacks currently working in film.

His big "epos", if you could call it that, is probably FULL CIRCLE. I know many non-film score fans who like this one as well, but I've never heard it myself. And I've never even heard OF SPACE TRUCKERS.

Did Towns do a Donald Sutherland film called Puppet Masters? Alien invasion film. Seemed low-budget but was decent enough, and had a good score as i recall.

Yes. Citadel put the CD out. I have it but (like so many others) haven't played it in years.

Glad to know that there are other Towns fans out there. I find myself lately constantly playing "Full Circle" (CD also has a non-score piece called the Haunting) and "Captial City" (for a British TV show that supposedly did play briefly on PBS in the states but I have not seen it, though I love the jazzy score). The only other Towns CD I have been able to get hold of is "The wolves of Willoughby Close" (a very dramatic score, but I prefer the more jazz based scores on the previous two).
I have never heard Space Truckers, but would also be interested in learning more about it.
I agree with those who think Towns is undervalued. I very much like his score to "Unsuitable job for a woman," but I believe that this (like so much of Towns' work) has not been recorded.

MP: Mon Ange - very suprising and really fantastic score. kind of mix between Bregovic and Danna's Little Miss Sunshine.

Any Cowns recommendations? I've heard only a few of his scores: Les Rivieres Pourpres II, Mon Ange, Cadfael (another great one), Wolves of Willoughby Chase,...

Yeah, WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE is a great one. Colin Towns has written some really good stuff. I'd love to have SPACE TRUCKERS and RAWHEAD REX!

His score for the sequel to The Crimson Rivers is also really good.

I just got these two and really enjoy them too.
I would add to the recommendations made by others here Town's score to the BBC series Blind Justice from the late 1980s which I recently found for sale in a used CD section. Great moody jazz!
As said by others here, Towns certainly deserve more attention than he has gotten so far for his soundtracks. I have not heard scores to Space Truckers and others but hope to find them at some point

Space Truckers is a 1996 sci-fi comedy directed by Stuart "ReAnimator" Gordon. It's a goofy B-movie, starring Dennis Hopper, Debi Mazar, Stephen Dorff, Charles Dance, and Vernon Welles.

Hopper plays a down-on-his-luck Space Trucker who gets conned into hauling a cargo-load of invincible killer robots to Earth for an invasion.

It's got some cool art design by the likes of Ron Cobb, Berni Wrightson, and Hajime "Sexy Robot" Sorayama (who designed the killer robots).

It's not great, but it's one of those movies that if you're in the right frame of mind, you can have some fun with it.

Funny coincidence -- a colleague of mine recently posted about the movie on Facebook. I'm also curious to know what it sounds like. In regards to my earlier comment in this thread, I've since not only heard, but also acquired his popular FULL CIRCLE. I get why it has such wide crossover appeal; it's all in the prog rock elements.

Whoah, there's even a CD coming?
Never expected that to happen, but this is definitely ordered!

Fun movie!
