Anyone besides me remember this music? It was written by Hollywood composer Tamara Kline.

This orchestral theme for CBS was just splendid. Majestic anthem for mountain aerial shots. Also, played in a long suite during screen credits (100s of production people) in the final 1992 broadcast.

It was never released in a recording. All I have is 15 seconds that I taped off TV by accident one day in 2000. But I want more! (If any collector has a video of those credits, I'd love to hear about it.)

I definitely remember and love this theme, which also was used for the 1994 Winter Games.

Back in 2000, I found a 40-second clip online but I've never found any recording of the whole thing.

I even e-mail Tamara Kline about it, but never heard back.

Maybe someday...

I fondly remember Ms. Kline's music for the CBS Olympic broadcasts. I too wrote to Ms. Kline (through her site) and never received a response.

There is a compressed WAV file (mp3-encoded) available here (direct link): http://tinyurl.com/2xfgun

This is the only recording I've ever been able to find on-line unfortunately, but if features two nice renditions of the theme.

Thanks for posting the link to that snippet of Kline's theme. It gives people the idea.

If I can figure out how to transfer my snippet from audiotape to MP3, then there will be two snippets out in the world. I'm not very techy, but will let this thread know if I succeed.

A little more info:

I had a brief exchange of e-mails with Kline in 2006. I found her website and dropped her a note to thank her for her theme.

She answered and indicated she wasn't doing much in the music biz now. But she had heard from other fans about this music and was mulling the possibility of a CD someday. She said she'd email me if the CD materialized. I wrote her one more time, recommending Lukas Kendall (who else?) as a sage in the CD production world.

I haven't heard anything further from her, and I can't find her website anymore. But, gotta be hopeful that someday this music will find its audience.

Thanks for the info regarding your contact with Ms. Kline. Please keep us informed if you ultimately do hear back from her about a CD release, as I'm sure many of us (or at least the two of us who have responded to your thread) would be interested in that news. smile

I had kept a video tape of the closing ceremony, mostly since I really liked the theme.

The closing credits are here, as a bonus!

Thank you SO MUCH, mediatwo, for coming to the rescue and posting those Olympic clips. After the first go-round of discussion, I tried to track down as many of the commercially released CBS videotapes/DVDs of the CBS Olympic broadcasts, to see if they had the Tamara Kline extended montage cue at the end. But it was not to be had. Only the brief introductory theme at the beginning. Her Olympic theme seems to have been used for three Winter Olympics (1992 - Albertville; 1994 Lillehammer; 1998 - Nagano). Albertville was orchestral; Lillehammer and Nagano were more synthesizer-flavored versions.) Tamara Kline has offices in California that you can Google. It's good news that she is at least considering putting her Olympic music on CD.

I have some of the 1994 Olympics broadcasts on DVD, and there were many variations on the main theme, at least orchestrally, I was familiar with the music from watching the 1998 Games and I loved hearing that extended version heard in the final montage of the 1994 Games at the end of each broadcast each night. I hope this music does come out soon, it is great.

I forgot to mention that in the credits video, they pan across a handwritten copy of the theme's sheet music (not that it's hard to play by ear, but fun nonetheless)!

By the way, I did check with Ray Faiola (who works in NYC at CBS) regarding CBS having this music in their music archives. Not so. Tamara Kline retains ownership of the music, so any releases will have to come from her. Is this rather unusual for the ownership of music composed for TV to be retained by the composer?

mediatwo, thank you supremely-much for posting the montage with Tamara Kline's Olympic music. Also the closing credits. Yesterday I doubted I'd ever hear this music again. Today is different.

With 6 billion people in the world, a worthwhile work (like this Olympic music) can still be in danger of slipping down the memory-hole of humankind. So...thanks for getting this 3 minutes-plus out there.

During my very brief e-mail exchange with her in 2006, Ms. Kline wrote this about the Olympic music:

"I appreciate hearing your feelings about the piece though, and thinking there's a market for it...Funny enough, I've recently received a handful of emails similar to yours, and it's inspired me to want to put a few of the versions onto a CD. I'm going to hang on to your email, and I'll let you know when that CD is ready. I'm not officially in the music business anymore, so it might take a little while."

No email yet, but it was a nice note, and I can hope. Interesting (from RonBurbella's search at CBS) that Kline owns the music (and the performance?). Maybe she's just taking her time.

Perhaps someone who has been in contact with her should point out this thread, the number of views it has received, and the youtube video. I have had this majestic music knocking around in my thick skull for 15 years; its time to get it out on cd!

A belated thank you for posting these links, mediatwo! It's nice to have an extended version of the theme beyond the relatively poor-quality file I linked to above.

WOW...I saw this thread and was stunned! I actually emailed Ms. Kline through her site a few years ago as well about this exact subject...I no doubt must have been one of the emails she was referring to. I never received a response though. frown

This reminds me of "Close Encounters," with Kline's music being Devil's Tower. wink

It's an amazing theme and I would love a CD release of it. I hope she can find a way to make it happen.

"I'm not officially in the music business anymore, so it might take a little while."

The statement above is a puzzling one. I hope it doesn't mean she simply stopped composing.

Thanks, everyone for your kind comments.

ANHaupt1337, please let us know if she decides to release her music. I'd be very interested in buying a copy.

thx99, I had a copy of your theme on my hard disk for awhile. It was a great way to remind me to (eventually) find my old tapes!

I can't thank you all enough for the 'footwork' you've done in tracking down this wonderful theme and it's talented composer. It was, to me, never less than a stirring and inspirational work in the overcrowded pantheon of TV themes, and to this day (thanks to the sound file posted on this board) rediscovering it after humming it in my head for over a decade brings back those unforgettable Albertville/Lillihammer moments. Just one other fly in the ointment... does anyone recall the jazzier version played as intro to Pat O'brien's nightly wrapup in front of the fireplace? No rolled eyes out there; I think it was a peppy and altogether adaptation of the theme. Anyone agree?

I do recall that jazzier theme that was played during the late night broadcasts. I used to have a lot of tapes of the Nagano broadcasts and I know someone who does have them plus the complete Albertville coverage. I have some dvds of the Lillehammer broadcasts with some bumpers and transitions. I heard that music a lot when I watched the Nagano broadcasts in 1998 and that last piece of music that was heard in the closing credits on that Youtube video was my favorite, especially in how it ended. I heard it every night when the Nagano broadcasts ended.

I've no fresh news whatever on this topic.

But felt moved to add a new post anyway, to this old thread. (I'm watching the London Games.)

Back in the early '90s, CBS did the Winter Olympic broadcasts from Albertville and then Lillehammer.

Those games had a majestic TV theme music by composer Tamara Kline, music that's a keeper--yet never released, or re-recorded, or added to an Olympic album, far as I know.

A few ragged scraps of it can be found on the Net. Theme is on Youtube. Low quality audio/video, but worth a listen:

Anyone have an update or link or good news about this situation?

Thanks.

This sounds like a job for Kritzerland. Kimmel and company tend to do a lot of the obscure material.
