Music Composed by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek

Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek has created a powerful, beautiful and dramatic score for the Canadian film Passchendaele. Newly released on DVD and Blu-Ray, Kaczmarek's stunning score at last comes to CD in this special limited edition!

Set during the height of the First World War, Passchendaele tells the story of Sergeant Michael Dunne (Paul Gross), a Canadian soldier who is brutally wounded in France and returns home emotionally and physically scarred. While in the military hospital in Calgary, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a mysterious and attractive nurse for whom he develops a passionate love. When Sarah's younger, asthmatic brother, David (Joe Dinicol), signs up to fight in Europe, Michael feels compelled to return to Europe to protect him. Michael and David, like thousands of Canadians, are sent to fight in the third battle of Ypres, a battle against impossible odds, commonly known as "Passchendaele." It is a story of passion, courage and dedication, showing the heroism of those that fought in battle, and of the ones that loved them.

1. Passchendaele (6:16)
2. The Attack (2:06)
3. Separation (10:31)
4. Little Town (3:07)
5. Pain (2:54)
6. There Is A River … (4:54)
7. Frontline Moves 100 Yards (:59)
8. The Cross (2:25)
9. No Solution (7:25)
10. The War (5:35)

Great movie, great string-writing - very dark and depressive music. Bought.

Haven't seen this film, but the descriptions of both the film and the score that I'm reading in this thread are very intriguing. I must check this out!

Is no-one else really excited about this? Surely a new release by this excellent composer should be an occasion to be celebrated. Mr Kaczmarek doesn't exactly produce that many scores these days. A limited edition of only 1000 copies and it hasn't sold out yet! Only a few people commenting on it from this board! Considering the stuff that sells out in a heartbeat I remain surprised by the film music community' s reaction to releases sometimes.
Thanks Varese from this fan.

I have never heard of this composer, the film or the music. But I like the sound clips and will be ordering this along with Varese's other limited edition.

I wouldn't consider Kaczmarek all that popular as a film composer, and this is the first time I've heard of the film.

I'll save my money for the next Varese Club.

Here are a couple of pieces to familiarize yourself with the very gifted and talented Mr. Kaczmarek:

Beautiful, beautiful music.

I consider J.A.P Kaczmarek as great composer, if you like samples of Passhendaele and you are interested to check more of his works, try to find
(not that easy these days)
Total Eclipse
Bliss
Lost Souls
(more reachable)
Unfaithful
Guerra e Pace / War And Peace (Italy or SAE)
Hachiko: A Dog's Story (Japan or SAE)
and you shouldn't be dissapointed.

Evidently even winning an Oscar isn't enough for a composer to get a noticed these days. Gee, what does it take? However, it does not bode well that the film was barely released in the USA. And elsewhere?

Maybe if I actually gave some weight to decisions of the Oscars in terms of soundtracks then this would matter. As far as this composer, I think he is above average and does some interesting work for a modern composer when compared to other modern composers but compared to the classics that are released so frequently, I would rather go with some classics. I've listened to a few of the composer's other works and they are nice but nothing to write home about.

PASSCHENDAELE is a Canadian film that tells a Canadian story. Is it any surprise then that this was not theatrically distributed in the U.S.?

It's funny, I was walking down King St. West in Toronto, Summer '08, with my McDonald's bag in one hand, a large Coke in the other, and who walks by me but Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. He was in town recording PASSCHENDAELE. I think he was a little shocked that this guy holding a greasy paper bag knew who he was. We had a nice, short, chat and he went on his way.

What did you think of WAR AND PEACE? I've played it once or twice but it hasn't yet made much of an impression. I guess I'm just stuck on Rota's grand version.

The scores that I've heard by him are quite pleasant, but there is a boring sameness to them. It's generally soft strings dominated by a piano melody, pretty much all the way through.
I prefer a bit more variation in the scores I like to listen to.

Definitely looking forward to getting this one - was wondering if it would ever be released. I have most of his other commercial releases, so this is a great addition to my collection.
