Announces:

THE GREAT ESCAPE
Composed and Conducted by ELMER BERNSTEIN
INTRADA MAF 7112

Intrada presents a 3-CD set featuring the music of Elmer Bernstein's The Great Escape in a definite presentation of the classic score. At the time of the film's release, Bernstein re-recorded selections with a reduced orchestra that was released on the United Artists label. The popular LP was in print for decades, and the program made its CD debut on Intrada back in 1992, followed by a couple of reissues. In 2004, the long-lost original film tracks were released on a limited edition 2-CD set which quickly went out-of-print. Now Intrada combines both the United Artists LP program and the original film tracks into a single album, providing a one stop for both albums. Featuring the original key art and cleaning up some anomalies from the film tracks, in addition to assembling the tracks as they were intended by the composer, this is the last word on and the definitive presentation of the music to The Great Escape.

Bernstein wrote 90 minutes of score and recorded it with 62 players. It featured a theme that has become one of the most famous of film themes. As Nick Redman mentions in his detailed and authoritative notes, it's "a theme that could blow the roof off a cinema. A theme that could make an audience wild. A theme that delineated all there was to know about war, captivity, freedom and escape. A theme to thrill, a theme to engage, a theme to just plain love. A theme that, like the spirit of man itself, might just not ever die."

All this on this specially priced, unlimited release.

I'm glad for those who had missed out on the VCL release. smile

This will make a lot more fans happy than Greatest Story would have.

Given it's not limited I'm going to wait to see what people make of it, particularly those who already have the Varase release from a couple of years ago.

I've never noticed the tape problem they mention in loud sections but I'm not usually listening to it through headphones.

So does this kill the Varese value of the deluxe? Just wondering as a deluxe edition owner. wink

Well after what I said I have to admit that this is a fantastic release. It seemed such a shame that one of the iconic scores from the 60's only had a limited release years ago, & was sold out in a couple of months. Anyone wanting this is in for a real treat, the original soundtrack recording just blows the album version out of the water. But as I thought, I won't be buying it as I have the Club version, but anyone who hasn't got it & can't afford the really high prices the older release is going for, will be really happy.

I'm thinking a few more sold out Clubs to come.

Someone who doesn't follow the release schedule will still nab it. Post it for $75 on Amazon or eBay and I'm sure it'd sell quick.

That's what I did with my OST of The Edge when LLL released the expanded edition.

They HAVE put the awful "Yankee Doodle" track into the body of the score, as opposed to Varese who sensibly put this jarring source cue at the very end as a "bonus" track.

Also means they've moved the former last track (Various Troubles), which made a powerful end to the first (relatively action-free) CD on the Varese, to the second disc which has plentiful action music anyway.

For these reasons I prefer the Varese as a better listening layout.

I've never owned the Varese Club release, as I wasn't around here back then. I'm proud to finally own this at a price I can afford.

Ordered!

I'll consider this at a later date, but being that I already own the Varese set, it'll depend on the reviews.
