THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR, Volume 1
Original Television Soundtrack
Music Composed by Bernard Herrmann

Our celebration of Bernard Herrmann's 100th birthday begins with one of the most important and exciting Herrmann releases in many years! After a wait of nearly 50 years since they were composed we offer a 2-CD set featuring eight never-before-released scores by Bernard Herrmann for the classic television series The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

The hour-long Hitchcock episodes allowed Herrmann's music to really take the form of mini-film scores unto themselves. And Herrmann wrote 17 of them for the series!

This premiere release features the classic 8-bassoon Herrmann arrangement of Gounod’s Funeral March Of A Marionette along with the complete scores A Home Away From Home, You’ll Be The Death of Me, Nothing Ever Happens In Linvale, Behind The Locked Door, Body In The Barn, Change of Address, Water’s Edge and The McGregor Affair. There’s action, romance, macabre humor and lots of classic, chilling Herrmann suspense.

Featuring nearly 2 1/2 hours of Bernard Herrmann, this is a landmark release and an absolute must for all fans of the composer's work.

Our Bernard Herrmann festivities will continue on July 2 with a thrilling concert tribute to the composer hosted by Robert Townson and conducted by Diego Navarro at Fimucité 5 in Tenerife!

If I buy anything out of this batch it'll be this but I have to check out the samples first.

I'm really surprised by the lack of response to this, and disappointed. This is honestly a huge release, I don't understand why it isn't getting a warmer reception!

I just pre-ordered it with SAE. I'm very excited to get some never-before-released Herrmann scores! My favorite Herrmann scores for this series aren't in this set (AN UNLOCKED WINDOW, THE JAR, WHERE THE WOODBINE TWINETH, CONSIDER HER WAYS), but it does contain a couple of fine ones in A HOME AWAY FROM HOME and CHANGE OF ADDRESS. Hopefully, there will indeed be future volumes of the Herrmann/Hitchcock Hour scores.

I watched some episodes a few months ago, and noticed some Herrmannesque music which turned out to be by Lyn Murray - chances are he wont get a dedicated release like this. If the series ever gets to dvd, would be great with isolated music tracks.
I'm not dissing this release, as it's obviously awesome and an immediate order. The soundsamples will convince anyone. smile

Regarding the cues called "Chapter Title", is it safe to assume that those are the brief foreboding sustained notes that accompanied the title cards of each episode? I hope so; love that little piece. Didn't know it was Herrmann!

When the batch from Varese was first posted last night I was a bit underwhelmed, although the Goldsmith concert is something I would like to have. Then lo and behold another release appeared a few minutes later, this one, and any disappointment was dispelled. A Herrmann right on the eve of his centennial and an unexpected one of gems from the Hitchcock series. 2 1/2 hours of Herrmann...sign me up!

Such lovely melodic Herrmann, after listening to the samples I couldn't resist. Sounds like the tapes were in wonderful condition as well.

OUTSTANDING!

I can't wait for Vol. 2 which has to include my favorite of them all: "The Thing In The Jar"

I would like to point out that Morgan & Stromberg are planning a rerecording of some of these scores.

Well, I preordered the Herrmann without even listening to the samples. I didn't need them to make my decision, but I'm glad the samples have been provided for those on the fence.

They came out at 3am on the east coast, and at 6am on the east coast you're complaining about a lack of response? You're answer is in front of you! big grin

Is Varese holding back on the Hitchcock directed episodes? (That would fill in a lot of gaps of their years together.) I don't know. Anybody got that book that came out a while back with all the episodes in it? Did Hitchcock direct any of these episodes? Dying to know.
