I've loved his music ever since I sat down to watch CRITTERS in the cinema all those years ago and those warm/sad strings played out that soothing Main Title over shots of American countryside. I've followed his career through some decent peaks, film-wise and a whole lotta troughs, although even during the lowest of the low in films, there's always been something of interest music-wise. He does seem to have a somewhat limited appeal to the soundtrack-collecting gang, with many of his titles struggling to sell-out 1000-1500 copies. Anyway, it's hard (for me anyway) to pick from the many great scores I've listened to and loved down the years by him, but for a bit of fun, here are mine, in no particular order... CRITTERS - probably because it's the one that kicked-off the Newman Love! I don't care for the electronic stuff that much and the suspense tracks drag a little, but anytime he's using that lovely Americana theme I just melt. MALONE - there's just something so achingly sad to this music (something I get a lot with DN, his BRAVE LITTLE TOASTER score is so heart-breaking at times). He perfectly captures the main characters' loneliness and regret with his strings and horns (similar to what Goldsmith did with FIRST BLOOD) and his fusion of synths on this one is brilliant. A real underrated gem to me. MR DESTINY - I remember buying the Varese album and just being blown away by this. Even moreso because it was one of those 30 minute jobbies that whetted your appetite but left you craving so much more. Sure, it cribs from cousin Randy's NATURAL score at times but what soundtrack didn't around that time. There's still enough darkness and sadness in there to get the heart going. ANASTASIA - There's music in this film that is amongst the greatest I've ever heard. The sad choir stuff near the end is stunning and he incorporates the songs into his score seamlessly. Should have won the Oscar for this one, me thinks. MATILDA - A delightful childrens romp, with one of his catchiest themes. Great film too. Okay, I should have made this 10, cos I've left off things like THE PHANTOM, HOFFA, LITTLE MONSTERS, BILL & TED 2, OPERATION DUMBO DROP, JINGLE ALL THE WAY, PARADISE, AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE, ICE AGE, & ANIMALS UNITED. Let's see how you do!

I'm partial to his 80's work myself. Top 5: Critters Malone Brave Little Toaster Bill & Ted's Excelllent Adventure Heathers 3 that I really wanted to add to the top 5: The Kindred, Frankenweenie and Throw Momma Firebirds, Dumbo Drop and Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead are a lot of fun. Matilda and Gross Anatomy both have wonderful themes. Of his later work, Galaxy Quest, The Phantom and Anastasia are my favorites. No particular LOVE for the Doo. But it's Newman, so it's still perty darned good!
