Among the rare released scores composed by Gil Mellé, which one do you like best?

• THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN
• THE ORGANISATION
• BORDERLINE
• TV OMNIBUS' two scores ("The Circle of Life", "The Forest Primeval") for THEN CAME BRONSON

The second half of disc four features the two Mellé efforts, both excellent albeit quite different from one another: “The Circle of Time” is a relatively traditional and acoustic score (by Mellé’s standards) for an episode involving an old woman (Elsa Lanchester) who lives alone in the Colorado mountains. “The Forest Primeval” is a more experimental jazz score for an unusual episode in which Bronson gets lost in Los Padres National Forest: scored for just eight musicians, Mellé reworked the score into a two-part, 14-minute jazz suite (“Waterbirds”) on his 1970 album by that name.

Hands down "The Andromeda Strain." I delight in the two "Bronson" scores (particularly "The Forest Primeval,") but manalive, do I love every second of what he did with "Andromeda." The technique and musicality in it is really breathtaking - just tremendous work, inspired and inspiring.

I love them all, but Borderline is the one I listen to most.

Me too - it's the Mellé within the TV Omnibus that I like most.

Borderline was unexpected awesomeness and the pick for me...but if his Columbo scores start coming out it might be a different story!

It's interesting to notice the results of the survey:
4 for BORDERLINE
2 for THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN
2 for THEN CAME BRONSON

THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN. "Favorite"? Not sure, it certainly isn't easy listening. wink

But it is easily the most important of his scores, released or unreleased, followed by some really striking work for Columbo.

Since there are so few it's very difficult to pick a favourite, they are all quite varied approaches.

I had to buy Borderline on the secondary market (un)fortunately, I didn't pounce fast enough. Mellé sells!

There seems to be a large amount of work IMDB that could have a modernised release. I would love to have some more. I think Intrada would be interested after the success of the first three.

Andromeda Strain gets first position for me.

If it had ever been released you would all be citing Frankenstein: The True Story.

Well dang, Jeff -- you've got friends in high places. Why don't you bug 'em to make it happen (or are the tapes tragically lost?)

No, that would be "Kolchak" or "Columbo".

There is still time for us to do just that; I hear that Frankenstein: The True Story may just well be somewhere in someone's pipeline.

That and Starship Invasions are two favorites of mine with regard to Mellé's film work.

Hopefully Intrada can get around to releasing The Sentinel given that it's a Universal production.

Ooh, you've woken me up! My favourite subject!

Of the so-far released Gil Mellé scores, I too am putting BORDERLINE at the top of the list. I certainly didn't expect it to be that good - the score was barely heard in the film itself, and it's from the beginning of the period when I started to lose interest in his scores... but BORDERLINE is terrific. I don't have to be "in the mood" to hear BORDERLINE - BORDERLINE does it for me!

I appreciate THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN very much. It's truly amazing... but despite its reputation, I get more real enjoyment out of his other scores which mix electronics and orchestra or small jazz ensemble.

THE ORGANIZATION was slightly disappointing as a release. The music is fantastic, but so little of it was available that the already short CD had to repeat some parts of the same track up to three times in order to make the 25-minute mark. I'm grateful for what we got, but it turned out almost like a cruel joke. If the full thing were ever released, it would knock BORDERLINE out of top place.

I like the two scores from the TV Omnibus set, my preference being for "The Forest Primeval." "The Circle of Time" has interesting parts, but I like it more in historical context than as a pure listening experience.

Of his unreleased scores, my favourites are FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY (jp's comment is tantalizing to say the least), THE SENTINEL and STARSHIP INVASIONS. His COLUMBO scores are great, but really, if you have a look (on YouTube for example) at any number of sub-par TV Movies from the '70s, you'll hear some absolutely incredible work. I think Gil Mellé came from another planet. Forget Jerry Goldsmith's good work on poor movies - GOLD OF THE AMAZON WOMEN is like PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE treated musically as if it were CITIZEN KANE.
