I have amassed a pretty decent collection of Sinatra through the years. After my Saturday finds, I recently added "Ultimate Sinatra" and "A Voice On Air" through recommendations on here and from friends. I now have:

"Frank Sinatra In Hollywood"
"Frank Sinatra The V-Discs"
"Frank Sinatra The Capitol Years"
"Frank Sinatra The Complete Capitol Singles Collection"
"Frank Sinatra The Best of the Columbia Years 1943-1952
"Frank Sinatra The Reprise Collection"
"Sinatra Vegas"

I certainly realize that there is some repetition here, but I am wondering if I am missing some wonderful music from Ole Blue Eyes'. I know there are certainly some pricey sets that consist of 12 and ever 21 discs. I don't want to put forth the kind of money that is being asked for these extensive sets. I am just wondering what I might be missing.

You're missing a lot that was done on the radio shows, but those aren't on any commercial box sets.

I might have a few suggestions to fill in the missing, but first, I must ask which "The Capitol Years" do you have? There are several collections with that title starting from 1 CD to two-disc sets to larger box-sets. Which one do you have?

The Capitol Years are a 3 disc and 4 disc set and the only difference is disc 4. I purchased one and I inherited the other. Here is the 4 disc set:

Sorry for the long link but at least I found it.

Actually, the Voice On Air is "a historic 100+ track, 4-CD deluxe box set culled from an invaluable collection of rare radio broadcasts and rehearsals immaculately restored from the original recording masters for unprecedented high-fidelity sound."

It sounds fantastic with great clarity and selection.

Okay, thanks. The Complete Capitol Singles Collection is one of the cornerstones of a Sinatra collection. I think I know which 3-CD set you have, which is basically a "hits" collection, so now you need to hear the "concept" albums as Sinatra intended listeners to hear them. Between 1953 and 1962 Sinatra put his heart and soul into his concept albums. Some were ballad albums and some were swing albums each one based on a central idea and a sustained mood. Once you've heard these concept albums, you'll be asking yourself (usually after slapping your own forehead) "What took me so long?!" The most economical collection is Frank Sinatra: Capitol Records Concept Albums:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BWI70W/sr=1-5/qid=1461694507/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1461694507&sr=1-5

Although not from master tapes, the sound is pretty good. It's out of print and getting scarce. I notice the price is going up, too (I paid $25 when it was released). Here is one on ebay, although amazon marketplace is cheaper:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Frank-Sinatra-Capitol-Records-Concept-Albums-CD-Boxed-Set-/191842120978?hash=item2caaae7512:g:HMgAAOSwbwlXAszw

Pictures:

Inside this tight neat little box you'll find CD replicas of each concept album in cardboard sleeves that replicate the original cover art and tracklists. My personal favorites are In the Wee Small Hours and Songs For Swingin' Lovers. The concept albums are supplemented by The Complete Capitol Singles Collection which only fills in the missing parts, because some songs were intended to be sold only as singles and not included in the albums. The albums themselves are the main body of Sinatra's music. If you haven't heard the concept albums you've overlooked 95% of his best work.

More later.

I figured it would be from good sources. The whole show is valuable, though, to people like me.

And it might not have the silly stuff. Does it have him doing The Woody Woodpecker Song?

Here is a link to the songs on set. I bought mine on Amazon.

"Frank Sinatra The Capitol Years"

Check to see if your set is mastered by Bob Norberg or Larry Walsh. The Larry Walsh mastering are very clean and faithful to the master tapes. The Norbergs use excessive noise reduction.

There's no escaping the fact that the 4-disc THE COMPLETE CAPITOL SINGLES COLLECTION was mastered by Norberg with the noise reduction. That's the nature of the set. But it's still enjoyable. Whereas the earlier 3-disc THE CAPITOL YEARS has the superior mastering by Larry Walsh, as does the 16-CD set in the U.K.

The Capitol era is where the puddle gets pretty muddy, for the reasons that Onya just mentioned.
I've done more than a little reading about the issues and, even though the Norberg remasters are mostly disliked, there are a few people out there (apparently) who are okay with them.
Conversely, there is a small percentage of listeners who (again, apparently) take issue with the Walsh remasters (something about the artificial widening of the stereo field, I think--or perhaps added reverb... I can't exactly recall).

Eee-Dee mentioned that she had the 3-disc Capitol set and the 4-disc Capitol Singles set, so I would say for the time being she's got that era nicely covered--not completely, by any means, but I'm not sure she was talking about being a completist anyway.

Eee-Dee, do you have any interest in the James or Dorsey eras?

Oh, I thought The Capitol Years set was the complete albums box. If it is that three-disc set with the purple book, then I am pretty sure it is Walsh.

I would recommend that OP get the complete set of Capitol albums. That is IMO the core of Sinatra's recorded output (along with the early to mid Reprise albums).

When she mentioned the 3-disc set I just assumed it was this one:

https://www.discogs.com/Frank-Sinatra-The-Capitol-Years/master/288844

Perhaps I am mistaken. I don't have this set (my brother does) but I believe the booklet cover is purple as you described.
EDIT: Ah, I see from the Discogs images the purple booklet is confirmed. Jolly good.

The OP has already stated that she will not be buying the big expensive box-sets, so I'm suggesting the economical alternatives that provide the same music. I will suggest a few more in a couple of days after she's had time to secure The Capitol Concepts Albums replica set. It's the best buy for her money, being the most comprehensive, in good sound quality and reasonably priced.

Yes, I already acknowledged in my first post that Eee-Dee was not hunting for the big boxes.

Who did the mastering of the Concept Albums set?

Jolly good!

Octoberman, there is no indication who did the mastering in the Capitol Records Concepts Albums box, but if I were to take an educated guess, I'd say Walsh with noise reduction inexplicably added. An irrelevant point and of no concern to the OP.
