THURSDAY, AUGUST 22

HIGHEST-PAID ACTORS---FORBES released its annual highest-paid actors list for 2019 which covers June 1, 2018 to June 1, 2019.

1. Dwayne Johnson--$89.4 million
2. Chris Hemsworth--$76.4 million
3. Robert Downey, Jr.--$66 million
4. Akshay Kumar--$65 million
5. Jackie Chan--$58 million
6. Bradley Cooper (tie)--$57 million
7. Adam Sandler--$57 million
8. Chris Evans--$43.5 million
9. Paul Rudd--$41 million
10.Will Smith--$35 million

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI---Rian Johnson explained his approach to the THE LAST JEDI which incurred the wrath of many fans, “I think the instant you start thinking in terms of how do you not step outside of the bounds of what the original movies did, you’re not thinking the way the people who made the original movies did. They were with every movie, they were pushing it forward, with every movie they were stepping outside those bounds and pushing the characters into new, emotionally honest, but surprising places.
That’s why those movies are great. That’s why they’re alive. If they had been looking at something that came before it and saying, ‘Oh, we better not do this because that is outside of this or that,’ it would’ve been different.”

SPIDER-MAN---Stan Lee's daughter, Joan Celia Lee, has sided with Sony Pictures in its unsuccessful negotiations with Walt Disney/Marvel Studios over the Spider-Man movie franchise, "Marvel and Disney seeking total control of my father's creations must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy. Whether it's Sony or someone else's, the continued evolution of Stan's characters and his legacy deserves multiple points of view. When my father died, no one from Marvel or Disney reached out to me. From day one, they have commoditized my father’s work and never shown him or his legacy any respect or decency. In the end, no one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney's executives."
Also, director Jon Watts has not been signed to return and direct any future SPIDER-MAN movies.

WE CAN BE HEROES---Priyanka Chopra will star in this Netflix/Robert Rodriguez sci fi movie about children who team up to save their superhero parents who have been kidnapped by alien invaders. Pedro Pascal and Christian Slater also star.

WELCOME TO SUDDEN DEATH---Netflix remake with a "comedic twist" of the 1995 movie SUDDEN DEATH which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as a firefighter who must save the spectators, including the Vice President, during a terrorist attack on a hockey game.

AWAKE---the cast for the Netflix sci fi movie about a global disaster when mankind loses all electrical equipment and the ability to sleep includes Gina Rodriguez, Finn Jones, Gil Bellows, Barry Pepper, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Frances Fisher.

BREAKING BAD---Bob Odenkirk confirmed the secretive movie based on the tv series has been filmed, "I don’t know what people know and don’t know. I find it hard to believe you don’t know it was shot. They did it. You know what I mean? How is that a secret? But it is. They’ve done an amazing job of keeping it a secret.” The AMC/Netflix movie is expected to premiere in 2020.

INTO THE DARKNESS---Hulu renewed the series for Season 2.

12 MIGHTY ORPHANS---Luke Wilson stars in this movie based on the novel about 12 Depression Era orphans who form a football team that challenges for the Texas state football championship.

TRIVIA---Jimmy Buffett had a cameo in JURASSIC WORLD as a bartender, who "gingerly keep the margaritas safe" during the Pteranodon/Dimorphodon aerial attack. Buffett is a good friend of producer Frank Marshall, who said, “I like to put him in a movie once in a while."

It's nice to see Paul Rudd making some good money.
He seems to be a genuinely decent, friendly fellow.

You might all think that this is sort of goofy, but there's this one part near the beginning of "Endgame", where Scott has come out of the Quantum Realm and he goes to where his daughter lives. Rudd's acting when she answers the door shows some nice touches of subtlety--if an MCU movie can even be said to HAVE any, that is--and he doesn't go over-the-top.

Damn, that awful. Good for her for sticking with it like she has, instead of selling out her father's legacy.

I mean, I have no stakes in Disney vs. Sony vs. Stan Lee, and I don't really care who ends up with movie rights for Spidered-man, but seeing her name popping up only made me think of one thing.

Wouldn't there be a better way to calculate highest paid actors? Like average per movie over the course of a year or something? Because Robert Downey was in 1 movie in that period while The Rock was in a couple plus a TV show. And if you count when they're hired instead of when the movie came out you can factor Hobbs and Shaw into that too. . .

The only thing of his that got released during the period was "Hotel Transylvania 3". Sure, that grossed $167 million, but I doubt he was paid $57 million for his voice-over work. Either he had some percentage of that film or he's still getting residuals from "Billy Madison."

I'm not one to defend Disney but Stan had a cameo in every MCU movie (or most of them at least) and when he died they did a tribute to him with the opening of Captain Marvel. So I don't know what shes complaining about.

I think Adam Sandler's Netflix movies are getting good ratings.

Me and The Missus saw the last one ("Murder Mystery" I think it was called) and we thought it was cute.
But that had more to do with the rest of the cast being decent and being a throwback to old screwball comedies.

Yeah, Sandler's latest Netflix movie broke their viewing records.

It was a rhetorical question. I know he makes money, I just don't know why anyone enjoys his work.

It's not suffering at the box office. 2018 saw the highest grosses in history -- $11.9 billion, up 7.4% from the previous year. (The number of tickets sold, however, peaked way back in 2002.)

I think the need for escapism and cathartic psychological stress relief is greater than ever.
