Yes, I just read it. Absolutely terrible news, but he did look almost unrecognizably bad in the recent photos I'd seen.
Ian Holm was my third favourite actor of all time (after Jack Nicholson and Anthony Hopkins). Ash was the one that started it all, but I've loved basically everything I've seen him in.

Very versatile actor with presence. He was incredible as Ash in ALIEN.
He was a good actor who for some reason didn't get the leading roles he deserved. One exception was The Sweet Hereafter by the Canadian director Atom Egoyan. A great film well worth checking out for people who mostly know Holm from his genre work (Alien, The Hobbit, The Fifth Element).
A fine actor, one I always enjoyed watching. I remember being particularly taken by his performances in Chariots of Fire and Jesus of Nazareth for some reason.
Very sad news. Ian Holm elevated every movie he was in by a few notches simply by being in it. Of course, he was terrific as Ash in ALIEN, a performance that is so nuanced, you find new interesting tidbits that he did every time you watch the movie. And years later, he was perfectly cast as the older Bilbo Baggins in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Just two of the many fine performances he gave over the years. Very sad to hear that.

He played Zerah, one of the Jerusalem Sanhedrin principals, in Jesus Of Nazareth.
Really sorry to see this. He was the perfect Bernie in Len Deighton’s Game Set & Match. If only they’d carried on with the subsequent two trilogies. It’s a bit of a shame he’s largely only known nowadays for his recent minor supporting parts rather than his stage work.

But most actors will be remembered for their movie work rather than their stage work simply because many more people see the movie performances.
I mean, it's no secret Ian Holm was a highly praised and esteemed stage actor, I just never had the chance to see him in a stage performance. My loss, I'm sure.
Oh man, this hits hard. I've grown up watching this man in so many fabulous roles.
I really fell in love with his work in the early 80's, when I first saw him in multiple movies. ALIEN, CHARIOTS OF FIRE and GREYSTOKE and BRAZIL.
I just had a huge fascination watching him work and enjoyed every singe role I ever saw him in. He was able to inhabit that character and make you forget he was Sir Ian Holmes.
Some roles that immediately come to mind...
The Madness of King George The Fifth Element Ratatouille(voice is nearly unrecognizable) Jesus of Nazareth And of course LOTR
Sigh...he had an amazing career and I suspect a full personal life as well.
Damn, what a colossal punch in the gut. Holm was so much more than just some journeyman character actor who blended in. He was fantastic in everything I ever saw and his skills brought tremendous subtlety where it might be thought that none was needed--but really was. He did it all--bigger roles, smaller roles, and he heightened whatever film he worked on.
First became aware of him as Himmler in "Holocaust," and especially appreciated his ability to transition from a comedic persona to a more serious one in the same film, as he did as in "Big Night" (one of my fave films of all time) playing, to perfection, the rival Italian restaurant owner, Pascal. It's a travesty Mr. Holm was overlooked for the Academy Awards that season as he created an unforgettable character.
Pascal (To Secondo): 'Bite your teeth into the ass of life.'

Agreed, though by all accounts LD was not impressed ... I keep hoping we'll get to see this series again (especially as I shall start re-reading the novels later this year).
He's an actor I've enjoyed watching for many years, though I've probably seen only a few of his films )and we can ignore the LOTR trilogy ... no interest). I think one of the first times I identified him (against his name) was in the 6 part TV series The Man from Haven (1972) ... a series which captured my attention because it had a wonderful title theme by Christopher Gunning.
And he was great as King John in Robin and Marian (1976) Mitch
