Bring him back to score feature films, I'm guessing the argument is. He hasn't scored a feature film since 2011, although he's kept busy with TV shows and other things.

Arnold isn't a farfetched suggestion for this universe in terms of suitability, but rather farfetched in terms of realistic expectations.

So far no suggestion here has equalled that of James Newton Howard. He was 'made' for this universe.

That also sounds about right. Let's face it, though - these movies are NEVER coming out.

I know that everyone will disagree but in my opinion Tyler Bates will be a great candidate!

Nope.Alan Silvestri is a far more realistic choice than Howard.Cameron has worked with Silvestri before and thanks to Avengers,Silvestri is a bigger composer superstar than ever before.

I'd wish it to be someone like James Newton Howard (in 90's mode), but I expect it will be Zimmer (who will probably just bag the gig, then farm it out to his many cohorts).
In my dreams, Bruce Broughton, Lee Holdridge, John Scott, David Newman or Cliff Eidelman get the job (and then in reality, phone-in a drone-in RC effort to appease the producers!!).
Pessimistic much?

I couldn't have said it better myself.

As much as I love Silvestri, I just don't see his style fit with a film like Avatar.

I'm not that big a fan, but if he could do something from the era of Contact and The Long Kiss Goodnight, it would be glorious.

P.S. Where's the release for The Long Kiss Goodnight? I'd love it to materialize sometime before I die.

Without knowing at first who got the scoring gig for Terminator: Dark Fate (which Cameron is both writing and producing), my guess—more of a bad joke, really—would be Junkie XL.

Besides, James Horner is so 10 years ago. /s

More realistic, perhaps, but JNH is more enticing for this project. We can always dream, can't we?

JXL is actually doing TERMINATOR: DARK FATE -- perfect composer casting, if you ask me. Not sure how suited he would be to an AVATAR universe, though.

While not suited that is the second film he has worked on with Cameron.

Yes, if Franglen is only working on the alien songs, after ALITA BATTLE ANGEL & TERMINATOR WHATEVER NUMBER IT WAS, I can see Junkie XL (or even Tom Holkenborg) getting the AVATAR score gigs.
He's a big name film composer now with a crossover appeal to the non score geek set.
I imagine he wouldn't be able to do it without Conrad Pope though.

Actually, Sonic haven't Pope as conductor and is a fun score.

Alan Silvestri is the answer

Please no. Give a rising composer a chance.

George Kallis
Anne-Kathrin Dern
Bear McCreary
Benjamin Wallfisch
Austin Wintory
Tom Holkenberg
Thomas Clay
Chad Cannon

If it goes to Zimmer, I hope he works with the younger composers like Kara Talve, Jacob Shea, David Fleming and not someone established like Balfe.

Maybe he'll pull off the score of a lifetime.

But going from Horner to Bates is hard to wrap around.

Not that different than Holkenberg I suppose.

Benjamin Wallfisch and Bear McCreary are very strong choices, along with Silvestri, even Desplat.

My personal feelings big grin

Wallfisch would be a good choice. He’s current and has tremendous command over the orchestra and works with synths quite well too.

But ideally I’d love Don Davis to score it. Or Goldenthal.

Only two writers in my book that are capable of writing good harmony and melody for the emotional and dramatic scenes are Williams and Silvestri.

James Newton Howard would knock this out of the park.

20 years ago. Yes.

Now... not so much.

Sure, JNH would be ideal for this. Really the only proper choice, IMO. He can do both the ethereal exotic stuff and the orchestral romance/action with equal ease. But unfortunately, I doubt that's gonna happen.
