As for what John Barry was thinking, he was actually the second choice. Initially, they wanted Thomas Dolby to do the score too, but it turned out to not be a good fit. Here's a sneak peak at page 8 of the liner notes:
JOHN BARRY:"They gave me a last-minute call to do it, and I thought it would be exciting to work with George Lucas."
Having heard this score...I'm glad Barry made that mistake!
I saw the news of the 4K release and have been listening to this soundtrack again.
Even 12 y.o. me knew that the movie wasn't very good and 3 decades haven't changed that. However the nostalgia aspect has kicked in and I can kick back and enjoy its silliness. Love Lea's 80's hair in the movie and I've always like the soundtrack.
