He ( along with Williams POTTER Theme ) has written the only themes ,which people who aren't familiar with filmmusic are able to identify or aware of

Alan Silvestri’s Avengers theme would like a word.

I think Silvestri's Back to the Future score and Elfmans' Batman would be recognizable to everyone.

I think he meant in the last 20 to 25 years.

I am not sure if Back to the Future and Batman are still recognizable to be honest. Do Gen Z people know Back to the Future and Batman?

I saw this last night, and while I don't think it's the worst film in the X-Men series (although it is a largely confusing and pointless redo of LAST STAND), what it does have going against it is arguably the worst score to a superhero film I've ever heard.
I was amazed at the lack of spark and emotion throughout.
There's a big action/emotional set-piece near the half-way mark of the film and Zimmer chooses to score this with a synth sustain!!! Not even his standard 2-note refrain. Just one held keyboard sound...for about 2-3 minutes!!!
Now I'm not saying I wanted a Delerue style string adagio to punch up the scene (although that would have been fkn awesome), but what Zimmer serves up is so detrimental to the sequence and adds absolutely nothing to the impact of the scene, they may as well have left the thing unscored.
It's mind boggling that the director or producers could have viewed this sequence, post-score, and thought it was any good or adding anything to the scene!
The rest of the music is generally weak too, pi$$ing away any emotion the scenes are crying out for.
Now I'm not a Zimmer hater. I don't care much for his latter day scores (I think they've been lazy and simplistic) but I do love a lot of his earlier stuff. But this is just terrible. Film damaging stuff. It would have been so much better and stronger with a score that offered some support in the action and emotional set-pieces.
He should have stuck to his promise of retiring from superhero films, cos he's seriously damaged this one with, what sounds to me like, a serious lack of effort or interest.

I agree with all that Kev McGann said above.

My thoughts 100% exactly!

Have to say I disagree with you gents. I was fully into 'the moment' with the film and thought the music worked really well towards the end with an emotional punch during the final 'big scene' when it mattered. Yes its not very thematic and is more 'effect but I'm finding its been a pretty regular listen for me since it came out. This is a much smaller scale feeling film to the recent superhero blockbusters and i think the sound and visuals matched it all just fine. Guess its kind of ironic as the source 'Dark Phoenix' story in the comic was one of the larger scale spectacular stories from the X-Men run but i didn't come away disappointed.
But hey...what do I know...I like Godzilla! :-)

Saw Dark Phoenix and Godzilla back to back. Thought both of the scores were good. Particularly liked the way Honda's original Godzilla themes were reused. Enjoyed the Godzilla film (but then I am a fan, and loved seeing his old foes in this movie) - however I thought the Dark Phoenix film was pretty naff, with the score one the best things about it.

Any idea if the CD for this is still coming? On June 3 Film Music Reporter reported that: "[m]ore details about a physical version are expected to be announced soon." http://filmmusicreporter.com/2019/06/03/dark-phoenix-soundtrack-details/

I don't believe that anything has been announced since, and considering the film's performance at the box office, the silence is deafening. Hopefully a cd still gets released.

According to the Zimmer facebook group Hans himself confirmed a double CD would be released with demos and experiments on the second one. It was about two weeks ago. Unfortunately no news since then. It was much better if one of our speciality labels would release the score on CD.

http://chng.it/9449Hx85QJ Apparently the second release has hit a snag. Any of you interested, please sign this petition which is gaining a little traction, and maybe they’ll end up still releasing the second cd!

For who is interested in my thoughts. I have reviewed the score. Maybe a good idea to read before signing any petitions ;-)

I think it's far from his weakest score. Moreover, in my opinion it is his best score since Interstellar.

I have to take issue with your assertion that "the only leitmotif in this movie is Jean Grey’s theme." That's absolutely untrue. You have the X-Men theme ("Gap"), the Dark Phoenix theme ("Deletion"), Magneto's theme ("Reckless" 7:20), Amity/Coda (traditional) and several others recurring motifs. And I definitely hear love, anger, betrayal, pride, rage, mourning, and regret in this score.... and I haven't even seen the movie yet! I get it, different strokes for different folks. But this score is thematic.

I'd love to have this as a 2 CD set. I doubt the petition will do anything, but it did work for Balfe's Ghost in the Shell score. smile

Yeah, totally. I signed it figuring it couldn’t hurt. We all complain that we don’t get to hear Hans Zimmer himself’s music and that is what we supposedly will get on a second disc. All his not completely fleshed our ideas. Would be great.

Not to me - I didn't see the film so I'm not sure if it refers to scenes, or characters. Who knows? I'm sure Hans knows. smile
