I've never bought this . So I played the samples again and I remember why. I don't care for the twangy guitar or squeaky stuff. So,question - how much twangy geetarr and squeaky sax is there ( roughly). I like the ' proper' music though, no problem. I don't want to buy a box of twang n squeak.
Yup, if you don't like twangy guitar & squeaky sax, then these are definitely not the albums for you
The first film (& the first Die Hard film) is on my *to watch* pile of DVDs & Blu-rays this Christmas, along with a few other seasonal favourites.
Yes, the "modern jazz fusion" aspect to the LW scores are essentially part of its overall character. Removing it would be like removing one of the lead actors from the series. I understand how it can be grating to those who only want to hear the more unadorned orchestral cues, such as the Hollywood Blvd Chase cue from LW1, but these scores are essentially concertos for sax, guitar and orchestra.
These scores never get old. Someone stated they are like Concertos for Sax and Guitar. 100% agree. Was just listening to his Sax concerto the other day… have it on a cdr but really wish it would get reissued. Maybe with a face lift. So good. Kamen is missed dearly.
While sitting in a pub with a pint I’ve been re-reading this great thread from back in the day. Such fond memories of the jaw dropping LALA announcement of this mega box set. Then waiting patiently for it to arrive. Overwhelmed at the time. Incredible attention to detail. So much music to emotionally consume. I couldn’t wait to play the stilt house fight and Mulholland chase. I prefer this arrangement of the chase cue from the LW1. Then you had all the music from LW4. Wow! Exhilarating experience. Gets played very often. Well done LALA!
Yes. LLL sure know how to do wonderful Box Sets. I get a warm fuzzy feeling just thinking about this and The JW Disaster Box set and HARRY POTTER and JURASSIC PARK and BUFFY and.. (you get my drift) nestling in my CD collection. It's even better when I take them out for a play and a read.
The music is like another lead character in the films, without the Kaman score they just wouldn't be the same. Usually with action films you don't remember the music, it does the job of underpinning the action & that's good enough, but you certainly remember these scores.

On a whim I searched the Sax Concerto cd on Amazon not expecting to see it but lo and behold a sealed copy was available for only $12! If you don’t have this there might be more…

Absolutely essential. Top 5 pieces of music ever for me, and IMO Kamen's finest work. Its gripping, playful, tragic, epic, spirited, romantic. I can't believe how much art he packed into less than 30mins. Sanborn & the National Philharmonic performance alone warrants hearing - with the writing being so great as well.... just perfection.
The b-side of jazz tunes with an all star roster of soloists is terrific, and ending with a recording of a key cue from BRAZIL - No shortage of praise can I offer.
