Hahaha maybe.

Everyone: Leigh has officially lifted his earlier request to preserve the surprise for physical copy folks! Feel free to discuss openly now! smile

Yavar

The music is from THE WALTONS TV series. A re-recording would be fantastic.

BTW, your Liner/Cue Notes are outstanding!

I mean, I'm surprised that nobody who has the actual album (digitally, or most backers should have it physically now too) has chimed in since Leigh officially declared it was "demoratoriumed" yesterday! smile

Mine is still crossing the Atlantic...

Same for me too, and a shame Leigh’s surprise has been spoiled (I should have kept away from this thread, I know).
I still think it was a wonderful idea to have this mystery track, and is yet another sign that shows how incredibly well Leigh manages these projects.

Yeah, it’s about a week too early for me but (in fairness) the digital release dates were actually put in place way back in February and would have been quite expensive to cancel and shift the day. The bonus cue doesn’t feature on the digital Crawlspace…but will be available (as a separate thing) shortly.

From what I read, Goldsmith composed the score for 20 Waltons episodes from the early seasons. Realistically how much music from those episodes would be re-recorded for a possible future kickstarter CD?

Aw man, I'm sorry Roy! I guess we can never underestimate how long international shipping with take these days. Hope you and Spymaster get your copies soon.

It's a fun tease...I remember when Tribute Film Classics used to include little Easter Eggs on some of their re-recordings in the past (like the Main Titles for Frankenstein on one release, or King of the Khyber Rifles on another).

BTW, your Liner/Cue Notes are outstanding!

Thank you so much for the kind words, Tony J! I'll pass along your comment to my fellow notes-writer on this one, Jon Burlingame.

Do you have Jerry Goldsmith at The General Electric Theater yet? If you enjoy my writing style enough to make it through, I actually wrote 15,000+ words for that one, altogether. wink

From what I read, Goldsmith composed the score for 20 Waltons episodes from the early seasons.

I think it's six, plus a song:

"The Foundling"
"The Typewriter"
"The Star"
"The Ceremony"
"The Literary Man"
"The Love Story"

and for "The Minstrel," Goldsmith wrote one original song for this episode, "My Parents' Child" lyrics by its writer, John Furia.

Realistically how much music from those episodes would be re-recorded for a possible future kickstarter CD?

That's 100% all and only Leigh's to answer, but I would guess that he would do all of it? It's a similar enough project to the GE Theatre stuff, in terms of the amount of music.

Yes - it would have to be all or nothing on this one. Likely spilling onto 2 CDs

From what I read, Goldsmith composed the score for 20 Waltons episodes from the early seasons.

He may have been *credited* for something like 20 episodes, but according to Jon Burlingame's research from decades ago, Goldsmith only recorded original music for six episodes (the ones David just mentioned). I believe the rule at the time (see also: the original Star Trek series) was that, if over 50% of the tracked cues in an episode were written by one composer, they would get screen credit for the episode's tracked score. I'm sure this is what happened on Season 1 of The Waltons. I think it didn't happen after Season 1 because there were rules about re-using music recorded for previous seasons (which Star Trek sometimes cheated on). If they were going to have to pay to re-record music on The Waltons anyway, I guess they just decided it was best to commission new scores for each new season (union rules required that one third of each season had to have original scores).

Yes - it would have to be all or nothing on this one. Likely spilling onto 2 CDs

Just hypothetically speaking Leigh, if a more ambitious campaign to cover re-recording all six original Goldsmith Waltons scores (+ original song from a seventh episode) for a 2CD set were to somehow fail, would you be completely opposed to separate smaller campaigns (with lower goals) for a Vol. 1 & Vol. 2? Gradually building up to a larger combined album worked well for GE Theater, and taking a two-separate-volumes approach would even allow CD editions to be baked-in from the beginning as Intrada did on Pursuit/Crawlspace/The People Next Door.

I'm not saying I prefer that approach! I'd rather have a nice slimline 2CD set with everything Goldsmith wrote for the series. But I would just hope that approach wouldn't potentially risk the "nothing" option. smile

Absolutely love this release…thanks to everyone involved! I have one question…where do I get the PDF’s of the written scores for Pursuit and Crawlspace that were included with my pledge? I went through my emails and couldn’t find a link to download these.

Probably the download message from Kickstarter was filtered. If you go to Kickstarter, access your account and check the messages, it should be there.

If you don’t get any luck, DM me on the platform and I’ll pop a link across

Received my CD yesterday and have had it on play constantly. Been enjoying discovering 3 "New-Old" scores from Jerry.
The recordings are incredible. Really appreciative of all the hard work that went into making these scores available for us all to hear after all this time. Thank you.

Listening to some of the complex writing, and I still marvel at Jerry and wonder just how the heck his composer's mind worked to come up with what he did, and then put it all down on paper.

In Crawlspace there is a short phrase that is reminiscent of Basic Instinct. I wonder if he recalled that particular moment from the score or it's because he gets into a particular mindset when writing music for that type of movie.

I also received my CD! We are less than halfway into 2025 but this is already my choice for soundtrack release of the year!

The music is Goldsmith in top form and Leigh with his team at the studio have again captured an incredible performance and sound. There is so much great detail and finesse. A fantastic packaging as well.

And the surprise at the end of the CD! I'm not exaggerating when I say it brought a tear to my eye. The Waltons is my favorite series of all time and Goldsmith's music is sheer beauty.

Great to hear you’re enjoying the album - we all had a terrific time recording these scores, and the Intrada team have done a really wonderful job on the booklet and packaging.

Re "The Waltons" - yes, a set of the Goldsmith scores is on the radar - whether it's next or second next(!) is food for thought at the moment. Either way, we had room in the sessions to record the "Main Title" and figured it was about time it was captured in its original form (I could be mistaken, but I don't *think* that version has been recorded outside of the show)

WOW this sounds great. Will the Pursuit/Crawlspace CD also be available for purchase for those who didn't participate in the Kickstarter campaign?

This CD has been on constant play in my car since it was delivered to me. It is a beautiful recording throughout.

But I have to admit that when I broke open the cellophane wrapper and popped it into a player, I rewound to the middle of the last track to listen to the Waltons first. This is so totally one of my Holy Grails, which is probably because it’s an indelible part of my childhood before I even knew who Jerry Goldsmith was. And then when I heard ST:TMP and then Masada, I realised that this was the same composer - and I was off. Papillon and Great Train Robbery next (thanks to Silva Screen’s releases).

I am right in thinking that the Waltons melody was tweaked slightly in the B section during the series’ seasons - a few notes. (The arrangement changed too of course.). The version as recorded here so faithfully is the original season 1 theme. If so, when did it change and was it changed by Goldsmith or by Alexander Courage?

Or am I imagining this?

I haven't seen this answered - maybe it was - but what's the difference between the Breakout and Breakout (alternate) in Pursuit?
