And actually also the only film he directed after Titanic. At least, I wouldn't imagine he'd admit it if it was. Has a little bit of Horner going on. The 3D was a sight to behold, and the motion performance by the lead actress was excellent. The music fit the film perfectly and I really enjoyed it. The CD drops from Milan in March, and I'll be picking this one up for sure. The pre-order price jumped a few bucks this morning on Amazon Canada, I'll just order it after it comes out. I also saw it in IMAX 3D, really the only way to see a film such as this (providing you have access to an IMAX theatre in your area). I was blown away -- and so relieved that it turned out so good after the disconcerting trailers! Has a little bit of Horner going on. wow Exactly my thoughts Based on the trailer they should've graphed CGI robot parts on a real actress. That's so fake looking its creepy. And absolutely no sense of mass or gravity in those shots. Looks more cartoony than 2D animation. Quality is all yesteryear now, recall when a 'great' film was truly great? The meaning of the word is diminished. There's amateur 3D animators online who can render people/humanoids to this degree. Thought the CGI was very well done, the acting was good, the plot was good, the score was great, and even the 3D was worth it. Overall, easily one of the more entertaining and enjoyable movies I have seen in a while. How does he decide if he is going to be called Tom Holkenborg or Junkie XL when he gets attached to a movie? Why not pick one and stick with it. I did not know if this has been explained somewhere and I missed it. I don't know, but it seems to me that he prefers his birth name more and more in the last few years. Junkie XL is really synonymous with his pre-film work, and although he's used that name in the film work too, I'm guessing that from now on, he's reserving that for non-film albums or scores that harken back to his old electronica sound, should it be required.    Posted:   Jun 12, 2019 - 8:29 AM     By:   Solium   (Member) I enjoyed the movie. Saw this recently and "endearing" was exactly what came to my mind while watching the film. I really liked the first third of the film (CGI issues aside) but it doesn't really go anywhere after that. I recently revisited the OVA and its just not very good, thus the source material is partially to blame. The score its actually very sweet and thematic in areas. Rosa Salazar was a compelling lead and if I have any issues with the “giant eyes” it’s that it obscures her face which seemed expressive enough. The whole story was engaging and unexpectedly charming. The third act suffered a bit from the old “too many endings” problem that one sees in many films these days. Still a very good film overall. The visual effects were tremendous. No one makes visuals like James Cameron and his team. I’d really like to see the next chapter. The score was surprisingly sweet outside the Motorball scenes. I’m not sure I was able to latch onto a theme per se but the score felt warm and organic for the most part which helped humanize the whole thing. And I must say: I love it! Holkenborg started out, for my classicist taste, as a noise sampler, bombarding me with dissonance and computer tricks. But then he persuaded me with his THE DARK TOWER score and the fantastic main theme. I graduated to like and even love his TERMINATOR: DARK FATE score - and now I gave ALITA a chance and MORTAL ENGINES. And damn, he really can write great themes and seems to go much more orchestral than before. His first works are, to me, mix bag, i like 300 and BvS (is better than MoS), but hate Deadpool and Paranoia, such terrible work. But he start with Run All Night, Black Mass and Brimstone, specially this one, I start to like it more, even Tomb Raider, The Dark Tower, Mortal Engines and Alita, are amongst my most played albums of him. His last stuff: Terminator, Sonic and Scoob are all enjoyable and very interesting stuff.
