In today’s program, we’ll be paying tribute once again to two-time Academy Award-winning composer James Horner. It has been five years since his tragic death and CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO once again is paying tribute to the composer by playing more of his music.
Back in the 1970s, James Horner dreamt of a career as a concert composer, but it was film scoring that was to be his true calling, and it would take him 30 years to finally return to the concert hall with Pas De Deux. One can argue that Horner was always writing concert works as he broke convention by producing extended cues that retained the long-form structures observed in classical music. End Credits similarly offered Horner the opportunity to write pure music which could be enjoyed without visuals; stand-alone compositions that developed the thematic and motivic material introduced in the score, but free of any narrative, dramatic tone or tempo obligations from their cinematic counterpart.
On today’s program we will be playing end credit cues composed by James Horner from such films as A BEAUTIFUL MIND, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGERS, GLORY, WHERE THE RIVER RUNS BLACK, RANSOM, ONCE UPON A FOREST, LIVING IN THE AGE OF AIRPLANES and many more.

BRAND NEW EPISODE!
THE FLAGSHIP SHOW: LA LA LAND RECORDS PRESENTS… EPISODE ONE

On today’s episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW, we resurrect a themed show that we started producing back in the early 2000s when this very record label was established. La La Land Records has been around since 2002 and since then we’ve produced dozens of shows dedicated exclusively to the label. We’ve also had partnerships with other labels including FILM SCORE MONTHLY, VARESE SARABANDE, KRONOS RECORDS, etc but over the years but these record label themes programs started to wane after a while. The last show dedicated solely to La La Land Records was back in June of 2012.
So, today, we thought we’d give this other go. La La Land Records has kindly supplied the program with some of their more recent releases and we’ll include a score from their back catalogue as chosen by you on Twitter.
On the program today you’ll hear selections from FAR AND AWAY by John Williams, SLIVER with music by Howard Shore and additional music by Christopher Young, MYSTERY MEN by Stephen Warbeck with additional music by Shirley Walker, POINT BREAK by Mark Isham, and CASPER by James Horner. Plus, we’ll pay tribute to one of the greatest guitar heroes of all time, Eddie Van Halen, who lost his battle with cancer on October 6th. We will spin the track “Respect The Wind” from TWISTER in his honour.

The fifth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score of the 1979 Ridley Scott directed sci-fi/horror/thriller, ALIEN, starring Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. The film tells the story of the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounters an aggressive and deadly Alien creature who is set loose on the ship.
The original score for the film was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Lionel Newman. The original soundtrack recording was initially released on 20th Century Records on LP in 1979. The expanded edition release of the score was produced by Intrada Records and was released in 2007.

So, I'm trying a new kind of show where I don't script any of it. I just ramble on about various film, TV and video music topics and play a little music.
Erik,
I enjoyed this show as much as your others. If you can put out content by bypassing exhausting research and laborious scripts, then go for it! You may not be comfortable with ad-libbing, but you do it well.
Now, about the Temirkanov recording of Alexander Nevsky: I agree that the sound effects were a poor editorial decision, especially since the effects themselves aren't particularly good. Even so, I suppose I don't mind them. I hear them, but it doesn't take me out of the music. I really do enjoy the performance.
Not that I want more sound effects included in soundtrack recordings! (Occasionally, there's an album where I love the sound effects - such as Williams' 1941 or Schifrin's Rollercoaster.)
Keep up the great work!
P.S. The name of the program (ad lib) is perfect.

Thank you. This was a nerve-racking experience because I felt so exposed. I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge that most do in these parts, which is why I write everything down but now and again I think I can make a good point off the cuff, so to speak.  I really do appreciate your positivity, which goes a olng way in strengthening my confidence.
Now, about the Temirkanov recording of Alexander Nevsky: I agree that the sound effects were a poor editorial decision, especially since the effects themselves aren't particularly good. That's fair but to me, especially when I first heard it and for just how great everything was proceeding the sound effects, it's just so utterly disappointing. I want to love it, as you do, but because everything else is sofa king good... but 20 seconds of HORRIBLY recorded sound effects in what was supposed to be the cream de la cream of ALEXANDER NEVSKY recordings is such a major failure of epic proportions. For all the things they did to get it right... they blew it with one of the dumbest decisions I've ever heard in a recording.
Keep up the great work!

The seventh episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score to the 1993 Steven Spielberg groundbreaking action/adventure film, JURASSIC PARK, based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, BD Wong, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards.
The film takes place on Isla Nublar, located off Central America’s Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park’s power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond’s grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island.
The original score for the film was composed and conducted by John Williams, performed by The Hollywood Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The original soundtrack recording was released on MCA Records in 1993 and was expanded by La La Land Records in 2017 that coupled this score along with Williams’ other score in the series, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK.
