Received DARKMAN the other day and holy sh*t what a grand soundscape the young Danny paints from start to finish.

That theme from HOFFA has always given me goosebumps...and it still does.
It's such a phenomenal composition.
And the way Newman bends it and adapts it and laces it through the film is stunning.
I'd never really noticed the Morricone vibe of this score, in certain tracks. But hearing the previously unreleased cue 'Who Are You/Betrayal' followed by 'Jimmy Goes To Jail' (which was on the original CD) is a real one-two punch that hammers home the Morricone-ism. He even does that off-kilter/Ennio style chord (think Bugsy) throughout 'Who Are You' to enhance the likeness. (I imagine it might be temp-track bleed).
Still, this is a whopper of a score and 30 minutes of new and extra music is just bonzer!

I'd forgotten how cool Danny DeVito's original album notes were, in his appreciation of David Newman.

"The phone call goes 'Dave, this is a Big One. Scope. Huge Themes ...powerful... heroic... dark... passionate...sweepingly bold...dedication...devotion...honour. The struggle of the early days. The adulation. The triumphant victory. The tragedy. The sense of loss. The resonance of an era'.
Dave responds 'I've got some ideas'.
These are Dave's ideas.
The music you are about to hear, is the reason I make the call.

I also prefer the flipper cover too. Less dark. Stands out more. Thanks LLL smile

Seriously. You guys.
I already loved the old Fox Records CD release. But this...
THIS...
It's fkn amazing.
It reveals so much more of the score. And the new sonics are sweet.
RTA Riot & Wake is immense.
Road House Death (previously unreleased)...aching...almost Accidental Tourist-like in its melancholy.
I could listen to this all night (and possibly will).

I agree. One of Newman's best. LLL release really opened up the score.

Hoffa is a great score. I have the OST, I don't remember if I picked up the expanded release.
