Murphy is a Liverpool lad. One of my mates gave him and his gear a lift once. Before he was a biggish name composer. We were on our way to see a movie he'd scored (Miami Vice I think). My mate had no idea where he'd ended up. Just some mild trivia...
Great ..another one finger to the idea of film music being an important part of the product. To create a film trilogy and change the composer on the last one (I’m looking at you ‘Bill & Ted’) shows utter disdain for the idea of a musical voice being a major part in an ongoing story.
I'm OK with them bringing on a new composer in a series as long as the composer and director make the effort to keep the musical voice intact and incorporate some of the established themes into the new film. I really liked Tyler's main theme for GOTG (especially the "Dad" cue on Vol. 2), so I hope they at least carry that over, especially with Vol 3 being more of a dramatic resolve with the group.

I love John Murphy. I listened to this last nite and unfortunately I think this just doesn't work for me. It's a boring score and as much as it seemed like Gunn brought out some great work from Murphy in The Suicide Squad, this is just a dud to my ears. To the point that I can't believe I'm saying that I miss Tyler Bates.
I enjoyed his score for the SS but this score is awful
This one just sounds like asking Murphy, "Can you do what Tyler Bates does, but worse?" Any time where it seems like Murphy's post-rock influenced creative voice is entering into the sound it lasts all of a split second. I set some high expectations and that is on me. If John Murphy works with James Gunn on that Superman movie (if it even happens), I would hope that Murphy can retain his voice.
Bit surprised at the reactions to the score. Id listened to it a few days ago and went in with a bit resentment tthat Tyler wasn’t doing it, but really enjoyed it. The choral stuff was great with a few stand out moments and some good sympphonic mements pulling the theme back in. Saw the film tonight and thought it worked really well. Good film with some pretty grim themes. Surprisingly, and a point a few critics have mentioned, this time the songs seem a lot more wedged in as if..we need to do this rather than the way they flowed in the last two. All in all good film, good score, good end to the trilogy. Although…if you’re like me and don’t like animal cruelty themes… brace yourself!
Maybe I'm just not remembering Bates' GotG theme very well, but track 18 is "The High Evolutionary" which is like a "Agnus Dei" or "Lacrimosa" type choral piece.
