Let’s lower the bar on perfection

But, but... it's not "perfect" anymore if the bar is lowered.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. And you can quote me on that.

As someone who has produced CD booklets before I know the limit is 22 pages or it won't fit (standard sized case). However someone (LLL?) has recently gotten more in somehow. The pages seemed the same thickness so I don't know how they did it. No wrinkles.

Wrinkled or unwrinkled, booklets the same size as a single sheet of toilet paper aren't of any great appeal to me. No wonder kids prefer LPs and LP sleeves these days.

There are many CDs with booklets which have considerably more than 22 pages. There's Tribute Film Classics for one, which usually had 32 pages of thick pages but the prize goes to SAE for their superior efforts to provide the thickest, most substantial booklets. At this very moment I'm struggling to slide the 38 page, thick paper booklet for "The Razor's Edge" (great Alfred Newman score) back into its proper place!

Some of our MMM CDs had 40 pages in the books. We included a tiny crowbar in the jewel case so you could get the books out.

I collect CDs for the music -- Unless a book has borscht spilled on it or it was left in a landfill for two years, I don't care about the rest of it. If I can read the text, I'm happy. It's not like they're original paintings by the Great Masters. But maybe I'm "different?"

A couple of your CDs did have original paintings by a great master. :-)

And how often do you eat borscht while listening to the music? ;-)

Yes, they did, and thank you for mentioning that. But it's just a copy of a masterful painting on 80 lb. paper -- not an original on canvass. You mean I'm the only person who eats borscht while listening to music? I thought everyone did?

I've had an incredible run of good luck with the film music CDs I've ordered. They've always shown up perfect. Now my wish list is so short and improbable that I'm pretty much done running that gauntlet.

The last time I had trouble with anything I bought new was in a complete series Blu-ray set, which was missing disc 4 and had two copies of disc 5, or some such.

Also, this is hardly new. Back in the days when I amassed lps, there was almost always some issue with the lp covers -- bent corners. scuffs, and warpage to the vinyl contents. Any lp I acquired from my teen days as a radio DJ were also almost always covered in "Promo" stickers that one could not pull off, and covers were often bent and scuffed. Sometimes "Promo" was embossed into the cardboard.

I remember once buying a rare lp limited import set of T-Rex that covered everything from A to Z, including some very rare tracks. I took it home after shelling out a goodly portion of my paycheck for the week, opened it carefully and put the first lp onto my turntable. The disc was so warped that the tone arm actually jumped off the disc and started skipping. I angrily took it back, and the very, very patient clerk explained to me that it was the only copy they had, and that it was probably the only copy that I was going to find in NYC since it was so rare. So...I kept it warts, bumps and all.

These days a damaged booklet or CD case doesn't really bother me at all. If a scratch or other damage on a disc or lp causes playback issues, and it is not a rare edition, of course I'll try to return it.

Physical media are, well, physical.

Those booklets are the perfect length. I hit the last page just as the CDs are wrapping up!

i understand that a business person has to try and save money in some part of the whole production. i don't work in record producing, but i think the problem is the same all-over. inferior pay equals inferior results. then the question becomes "how many will complain?".

i don't particularly like that jab about ocd. having ocd ain't easy. joking about it is.

Lukas, what movie poster is that in the photo? I can't find anything like it in IMDB under Steve Allen or Carroll O'Connor.
