Watched this on Netflix last night.
Loved the score. Really loved it.
Classic Elfman in his many and varied styles (there...dems the positives outta the way).
The film is a horrible mess.
The first hour is just about bearable, as it has some cool 80s Spielberg mystery/impending disaster sequences that are well staged.
The family and other teacher/college characters are the most annoying bunch of w@nkers I've had the misfortune to watch in recent times.
Insufferable in their desperation to be quirky and offbeat.
Then, after the first hour, I don't really know what this film becomes.
A boring, navel-gazing drudge about death, impending death, not wanting to die etc etc.
Basically, the inevitability of death.
And a silly sub-plot about infidelity and trust (linked to death) that is farcical and daft.
I watched it through to the end (the film is 2 hrs 15 minutes long...VERY LONG) due to the Elfman score.
I'd long given up caring what happened to ANY of the protagonists (my missus had given up long before and took herself off to bed).
So...great score, shame about the film.

Yes Joan, I agree about the satirical bent the film was going for, but it was ill-judged and tonally off the chart.
No one in the film was likeable or endearing to me and I quickly grew tired of and could not sanction their buffoonery any longer.

I'm not sure about the song at the end (not by Elfman). Sometimes I like it and other times I don't.
