Wow so Tango & Cash was sourced from Faltermeyer and not the studio? That’s amazing, is there any other way to contact Mr. Levay? Maybe through the university that he works for or something like this? Just in case he misses the email?

I noticed that he has been inactive on FACEBOOK for more than half a year ...
Damn, I'd give a lot for a legal release of this score!

I don't think he uses that Facebook profile at all.

I was in contact with him during the pandemic. I remember he commented on it.

Another good lead may be the LaLaRecords album producer of ‘Tango & Cash’ as well as the album producer of the Rocky IV re-master CD that came out in 2010 (at least in regards to a lead at Warner)

Mr. Levay works at MusikTheatre AnDerWien in Vienna, at least that is what is listed on Facebook, I’ll try sending them an email.

I’ve also been re-listening to the Faltermeyer score for Tango & Cash. I feel like being familiar with the particular synthesisers that were used in the score plays a part in enjoying them. Same goes with a lot of 80’s synth driven scores (at least for me). There’s a lot of info on them on Youtube if anyone is interested. I remember last time I listened to the T&C score I wasn’t that familiar with synth types so I didn’t get into it as much, but since then I’ve researched them more and it makes for a much more interesting listening experience.

Its funny. If you listen to any of Faltermeyer's late 80s synth work, the sounds are very crisp, clear and modern.
There is this twisted notion, usually from a whinging bunch who always bang on about 80s scores sounding "dated" yet when I listen to Tango & Cash, Running Man or Beverly Hills Cop 2, the FM synth sounds and synclavier programming is state of the art and sounds more upto date than many "modern" film scores.

I just listened to Lorne Balfe's Bad Boys For Life score, and his rendition of the main theme includes some very cheap sounding terrible synths especially in comparison to the original Bad Boys score. The drums don't help either, very compressed and overly dry. Even the Top Gun Maverick score had overly compressed dry drums in some of the tracks.

It's true that the tango & cash soundtrack sounds more modern than other 80's synthesizer soundtracks
For Running Man and Beverly hills cop 2, they stay in their place in the 80s
The intro of running man and beverly hills cop 2 sounds 80 like never before, but you have to be familiar with the sounds of the synclavier (With the synclavier you can play either in stereo or in mono)
By the way, it is the synth that was revolutionary for film music.
Giorgio Moroder,Harold Faltermeyer,Sylvester Levay,John Carpenter...have used it and even orchestral composers like Thomas Newman,Alan Silvestri,Howard Shore,...
The synclavier has sounds that marked the 80s
But in the 80's they had a way of playing on the synth (chords, brass and strings were unique) the only instrument that marked strongly this time was the drum machine (toms), simmons drums and the very fat sounds used on the oberheim, minimoog, prophet 5 ...

I take an example like stranger things,
the producer of the series didn't want michael stein and Kyle dixon to play their music like in the 80's because he didn't want it to sound 80's at 100%.
However they had the synths from the 80's and they played in a more modern way.... there are some exceptions in some tracks that sound 80's.
The Yamaha DX7 was also a synth that had marked the time with synth jazz sounds and its unique electronic piano sounds

Levay is 77 now, so I guess he doesn't work as much as he used to at the theater, but it's worth a try.

Levay responded now. He has been out of town, as he put it.

He will check whether he has the masters or not.

Sadly not.

I’ve noticed that the main bit of music that is missing is really from the beginning of the morning hotel shootout scene to the end of the motorcycle chase scene, which is about 5 minutes of music.

I hope Mr. Levay at least has this piece of music, and if he doesn’t have all the masters, that it would be possible to at least digitise this piece and share it with the music community. I know the beginning is cut-off, but that is really the same bars of textural music repeating with a little crescendo towards the end, and the rest off the intro is on the CD.

Also, I’ve just watched the intro clip on YouTube, and compared it with the score version on the CD, the entire sting segment seems to completely differ between both versions and even the instrument parts seem to differ, if someone has some free time, can you guys listen to both of these and post your opinion? It seems like it’s either a different version of the sting in the intro part, or it’s mixed completely different with some sounds added and some sounds edited out. It’s possible the movie mix of the sting was done after the score was complete and is a whole other mix of the same part.

If this is the case, and there are no masters for this track, it’s technically possibly to edit the first few bars of the intro before Sly starts speaking, and add them onto the existing part, and have a fan edit that would essentially replicate the same version that is in the movie, minus the final mix of the sting queue that was done by the movie studio after the score was submitted. If this is the case, then really, the best piece of music that is missing is that 5 minute ‘morning hotel/motorcycle chase’ piece.

Additional info: the CD version intro starts when Sly is saying “A violent crime, every twenty…’ , all music previous to this is not on the CD, but is essentially the same bars repeating. It sounds to me like the growl of a lion was sampled, and then slowed down, modulated and had effects added to it (that’s the “call” part of the bar, and then the “response” is the 3 notes of heavy drums/drum machine).
