I just purchased the earlier edition with nicer artwork but less music. What kind of stuff is it missing from the Cometa one?

The 1979 Cometa LP and the 1981 Web Records LP both contain 12 tracks, with runtime duration around 30:40.

I never owned the Swedish CD from 2007. It appears to be a re-issue of the LP program plus one additional 4-minute cue (track #13) to yield about 34:34 minutes.

Track#s 14 through 23 on Cometa's 2012 CD seem to me to be basically alternate takes.

Interesting, thanks.

The additional cue from 2007 appears to be a reprise of the “love” theme.

From watching the film it seems like they left off some of the more atmospheric, scary stuff. The original album focuses more on the adventure/romance stuff. (Or maybe that was tracked from an entirely different film)

I was able to find a copy of the Cometa version from 2012 and should have it in a few weeks.

I’m happy to have both versions. I absolutely love this score and the film, especially all the stuff where they first wash ashore and explore the weird island (track 6)

I could not pass up the beautiful artwork on the older CD.

Never saw the film, myself, but I think AIP/Corman added footage and additional music not part of the Italian production.

Luciano Michelini's music for this flick conjures, for me, associations with John Scott's orchestral work in the fantasy genre. It's a nice listen, but it's not 'horror' to me.

L'Isola degli uomini pesce almost feels like a soundtrack from a decade earlier, like a late-'60s fantasy (such as Wally Stott's CAPTAIN NEMO).

1st half of the movie/score is best plenty of lively synth - stingers, blasters, part orchestra, 2nd half bit tacky & repetitive, what got me you hear the church organ near the end of the movie that has prominent sound - I'm surprised it wasn't used earlier.. its horror, still a good score.

I got my hands on the Cometa edition and it definitely sounds better. The extra tracks are mostly very slight alternates, but there is some previously unreleased film versions in there too, such as the second to last track, which is for the scene on the beach with Barbara Bach feeding the Fishmen.

Whoever put this album together made some pretty big errors though. Some of the stuff they try to pass off as bonus material is simply half a cue, cut off midway. Some are also mislabeled.

I’m glad to have both versions though because the old artwork is just gorgeous.

What a great score.

Glad you love it.
I hope more FSMers get 'into' Italian soundtracks.

Unsure if 'The Mutant' (plus any other interested FSMers) owns much European CDs or not, but might I suggest some items (in reverse chronological order) you might wish to explore:

  • 1987 Killer Crocodile by Ortolani
  • 1983 Zeder by Ortolani
  • 1978 Killer Nun by Alessandroni
  • 1977 Yeti by Romitelli
  • 1975 Ritratto di Donna velata by Ortolani
  • 1971 Lady Frankenstein or La terrificante notte del demonio by Alessandroni
  • 1971 Light at the Edge of the World by Piccioni
  • 1966 La lama nel corpo by de Masi
  • 1961 Il gigante di Metropolis by Trovajoli

If you're into Italian Gothic horrors from the '60s, there are a number of soundtracks from flicks with Christopher Lee or Barbara Steele. Plus all those soundtracks from Mario Bava movies! smile
