I'll hold my tounge about a Neil Gaimen project - but I'm having a hard time picturing Ian McShane in a role that doesn't feature him saying curse words every other line. smile

Well amazon.com has the MP3 samples up here:

It does sound a bit Danny Elfmanish. (At least the End Title track does.)

Thanks for the MSN link, and the tip about CD Universe -- ORDERED!

Finally got my hands on this baby and I am not at all disappointed. It worked beautifully in the movie, complimenting the gorgeous visuals, superb animation and quirky story, and now listening to it alone it is unique, sweet, imaginative, colorful and beautifully melodic. Bravo, Monsieur Coulais. A fantastic score. I am particularly fond of the French language vocals, especially Coraline's theme sung with wistful melancholy by Mathilde Pellegrini, and the nightmarish finale cues. Must see this movie again.

Being French, and from what i heard of the Coraline samples, i must say that most of Bruno Coulais' lyrics are actually a strange language of his own (was also the case in other soundtracks with the exception of "The Chorus")...
... which gives the songs an exotic flavor, even to French ears... ;-)

Ah, merci, Olivier! I was wondering about that! My grasp of the French language is not too good, so I was thinking that perhaps my French vocabulary had become even worse than I remembered!

The vocals in the "Coraline" score do sound almost Latin in places -- in track 2: 'Dreaming' it sounds almost like the children's choir is singing 'honi soit qui mal y pense,' the motto of the English Order of the Garter! -- but whatever they are singing, it is really haunting. I only have "Les Choiristes," which is also quite lovely, but now would love to check out more of Monsieur Coulais' music.

I cannot wait to purchase the score. We viewed the film the day after it premièred and were extremely impressed. Spot-on commentary, Dogplant (^_^)

*I also look forward to exploring Coulais' earlier work. I am not familiar with his compositions beyond the CORALINE score.

I'm also very excited about getting my hands on the score. It was a perfect score for a damned perfect film. If this doesn't take Best Animated Feature at the '10 Oscars, then those folks officially have lost all of their taste.

My wife and I finally got around to seeing CORALINE last week (in digital 3D!), and absolutely loved it, and its score. Beautifully-made film (right here in my new home town of Portland, OR.)

I’m not too familiar with Coulais’ other work, but I can vouch for his score to HIMALAYA, which is great – melodic and haunting. (We saw a sneak preview of the film years ago at a showing in Santa Rosa, CA with the director in attendance, and I commented to him after the film how much I liked the score, and he was very complimentary towards Coulais.)

Jon, the score is an exquisite delicacy; unique in its own being and right. Akin to a fine wine that will age gracefully by time...one can only fathom the "listening nectar" it shall yield in the years to come.

I saw the film twice (loved it), and got the soundtrack CD. Coulais' score is lovely, with those dreamy, pseudo-French vocals.

Has anyone else noticed the pop/click/skip at 00:21 on track 23 of this CD? Assuming we'd gotten a defective copy, we took it back to the store and exchanged it for a new copy, which unfortunately has the same defect in the same spot. Phooey!

EDIT: Just noticed another one at 00:48 on track 31. Double phooey!!

Defects just seems to be the norm anymore. I was watching a DVD of a tv show a couple days ago, and they had actually screwed up the episode order on one disc so the titles didn't match the episodes, and one of the episodes on disc 2 had been switched with one on disc 3. Quality control and the "seal of approval" doesn't seem to be in play in many cases now.

it didn't frown
the grossly overrated UP stole it.Finally watched this on Blu-Ray.
I started out in 3-d but the color was so bad, lots of pink, i switched to the 2d version.
The image is so sharp ( I assume it was shot hi-def) it practically is 3d!

I love stop-motion. PIXAR cg is way cool, but Selick's brand of animation is something to treasure.
A truly inventive and visually stunning film

check it out!
