It is great that we can hear WITH and WITHOUT versions on the FSM CD.

WARNING!!! Watch out for the Gory Twist at the end of the clip eek

Yes, while it could be argued that the original LP and CD contained the lion's share of the highlights, all in a tight wrapping. I always wanted that harp opening of KICK THE CAN and...moreso...the sad cue when the old dude is being fobbed off by his kids about visits. Truly heart-breaking stuff.

Likewise. TWILIGHT ZONE is an excellent score and it's Goldsmith, I certainly had to have the full score as well. But if posters are wondering and on the fence of this (so they are obviously not longing for the harp opening), I would say the original LP stands well on its own.

Great Goldsmith score from a great period saw the film in Nov 1983 found it an uneasy watch owing to its circumstances about 6 years later heard Jerry give a spirited performance of the suite one of his BBC radio concerts The FSM album along with 2 disc Poltergeist are prized parts of my CD collection.

The perfect thing about this CD release is that it has everything.
The full score from the film.
The songs and cartoon source music (if you so wish).
The original album segment suites.
And...even the alternate Young Again sequence from KICK THE CAN, without the Scat Man, is different enough compared to the other version to make it interesting.
Expansion Perfection.

I've just remembered something else about the film.
At the beginning of IT'S A GOOD LIFE, there's a scene where the kid's bike collides with the lady's car and it has always fascinated me because it is SO REALISTIC.
I would replay the scene again and again when I was younger, amazed how nobody got hurt while it was filmed.

It's me again...bangin' on about this score again smile

It really is quite the feat of engineering.
There aren't many composers who could provide FOUR separate scores, all typical of the composer and his signature/style and yet ALL sounding like completely different scores.
The tense/percussive sound of TIME OUT.
The nostalgic/tender/lyrical style in KICK THE CAN.
The mysterioso/manic-cartoon shenanigans going on in IT'S A GOOD LIFE.
And the driving/snarling/devilish music surrounding NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 FEET.
Absolutely incredible stuff.
What an album!
It gets better and better every time I play it.

That's true... perfect album of one of Goldsmith's best scores ever.

I agree, it's a wonderful score and the original LP program is a "perfect album".

One short track not on the LP that I absolutely love is "Weekend Visit" for the scene where the grumpy old guy is meeting his family with his suitcase packed only to be told (again) that they can't have him visit this weekend. What an incredible 96-second miniature symphony of heartbreak and longing.

Revisiting this score in light of the scary movie season. I admit to not having listened to this score much outside of the end credits suite but this album really endeared itself to me over the last few days as I've been listening during my commute. I echo the praise--Goldsmith was always a master of details but the episodic nature of this score really shows his range--not something you would get the opportunity to hear much of in motion picture scoring.

Plus the eyeball disc is pretty cool too!

This score is an under-rated masterpiece from Goldsmith, as you essentially get 4 entirely different scores within and absolutely showcases his mastery of different styles and boundless imagination.

Sounds like you're talking about Rod Serling, too. What a combo!

I echo 100% of the October 15th posts so far. It's as lovely and energizing as it is brilliant.

The short cue Harp & Love is I think my favorite of Jerry's gentle pieces. Such a beautiful piece, and to think it didn't make it onto the original OST!

And Tom's comment about the score being essentiall four totally different scores inspired me - while in a state of prochrastination with some OCD, to split the four parts into seperate albums on my iTunes. With apologies to Joseph Williams for not including his song. I love your dad though!

First off, the FSM CD is excellent! I always enjoyed the Original LP Album as well.

I was lucky to see Jerry Goldsmith conduct The Twilight Zone the Movie Overture Live in February 1984 at the Music Center Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. Recorded it on my pocket Panasonic Cassette Recorder. It's certainly not perfect but it's live "you are there" sound and may be the only record of the event. It was thrilling to be there. Great memories! He also conducted a superb 20 minute Suite from UNDER FIRE with Tommy Tedesco on guitar. I've posted it a few times here.

Here's the recording of Jerry conducting Twilight Zone the Movie, Overture. Director Sydney Pollack who was the concert's Emcee, introduces. Hope you enjoy!

Considering it's from the audience, that is a superb-sounding recording, zooba!

Thanks Jim. Wow, hard to believe that was 40 years ago. Cheers!
