THE TWO JAKES could have been great, but it took a lot of wrong turns and ended up unremarkable and boring. I've seen it once when it came out, sheesh, what a mess. CHINATOWN is one of my favorite movies ever, I've seen it numerous times and will see it again. I didn't expect THE TWO JAKES to be that good, but it's a pity that it turned out to be so uninteresting. Doesn't help that Goldsmith did not score it; at least, we'd have a CHINATOWN companion piece.

My theory is that when Nicholson showed Goldsmith the film, Goldsmith said, "Forget it, Jack. It's not Chinatown."

I remember years ago MV said all would be revealed soon. I'm still waiting for "soon" to arrive. EDIT: Got it a little wrong. Here is what he said: In 2015 all will be revealed. MV

I seem to recall that Jack Nicholson and Van Dyke Parks were friends and that's how he got the gig, this of course could be wrong, but I seem to recall being told that sometime ago. I also do seem to further recall hearing a story that at some point Jerry was approached to do the picture after it not testing well and either turned it down or was unavailable when the film need to be finished by. This of course goes back about 25 years, so I could be mistaken. but, it also makes some sense. Ford A. Thaxton
