Also, no Danger Motif!
Drawgoon = "Actually there is one. Towards the end of the opening track, around the 5:38 mark. Easy to miss, though."

Haha, yeah. I missed it on the first two go-rounds and the fact it's in my least favourite cue didn't help, but sure enough, it's exactly where you said it is.
It's like he's T-R-Y-I-N-G RRReeeeaaallllllyyyyyyyyy hard to avoid doing it, skirting it in the build-up....and then.....
DEH DEH DEH DEEEERRRRRRR, he caves in and has to let it out!! smile
Still, I'm gonna forgive him this time cos the score is so bonza! smile

Just arrived from Intrada and spun! Oooh it is very, very good!

It's certainly a lot more traditional, orchestrally, than I was expecting. Good quality, classic Horner, but fresh and original. I suppose if I *had* to liken it to previous works it would be a cross between Gorky Park (Irena's Theme) and Zorro - both favourite works. Clearly he saw Antonio Banderas and the memories came flooding back! Not quite as lush in orchestration as his 80s classics but as good as it gets these days.

Is it just me, or since the disappointing Avatar, has Horner been writing some really good stuff? Black Gold and The Karate Kid stand head and shoulders above most of the rest of his output from the last 10 years. I'm suddenly quite excited for Spider-Man!

You should just think of it as a trademark smile. It almost wouldn't be a Horner score without it.

There's something recalling Schindler's List in the main theme but I love this score!

I can't believe the lack of buzz around this score!
It's Horner in big, sweeping 80's style mode, with a killer main theme and some excellent suspense and action scoring.
The track Leaving As An Emissary is PRIME Horner.
I'd suggest even fans who have grown disillusioned with old Jimbo of late should give this one a go. It's seriously GREAT!!

Agreed, this is a really enjoyable Horner score from start to finish, mixing a bit of his 80's style exuberance with the swelling orchestration from his later years. The main theme is a bit of a cousin to THE FOUR FEATHERS, plus there is some Middle Eastern vocalizations featured sparingly, but neither of these are drawbacks, in my opinion. And the action cues near the end are indeed an exciting dose of old school Horner.

I got this score in the mail and Friday and have listened to it three times already over the weekend. Between this and Karate Kid, this is some of the most best Horner material I've heard in quite some time. Sure, there are similarities to Enemy at the Gates and Zorro, but there is so much to enjoy in this score. Journey 2 by Andrew Lockington and this are shaping up to be my favorites so far this year...

I'm second to none in my bashing of Horner when he's been naughty, but sometimes I just want to hear one of his scores. He's a little like John Barry in the way he scores scenes--they are nothing alike in terms of their melodic approaches, but both often seem to score the whole SCENE with a cue, writing for the tone of the scene and not so much following each response and emotional change.

I can't get audio on this computer but seeing how some compare it to TROY and FOUR FEATHERS, I might roll the dice. Any other comments from those who've been listening to it for a month or two?

Strange, I was expecting to really dig Black Gold but I haven't been able to appreciate it as much as a lot of folks around here. Kind of like Captain America from last year...I heard so many wonderful things and extreme high praise about the score and then when I actually listened to it from start to finish I didn't get it.

I'm always willing to admit though that maybe I wasn't in the right mood or atmosphere to appreciate these scores. For example, when I first heard Captain America I was driving to my ex-girlfriend's house (enough time to hear nearly the whole score), a relationship that was never quite right. I wasn't angry or upset per se at that exact time, but maybe my subconscious feelings towards that situation colored my perception of the score when I listened to it at that moment.

Can't remember the circumstances surrounding my first listen to Black Gold but when people in this community so vocally cheer for a new Horner score and I, a huge Horner fan, don't understand the fanfare, I'm willing to give it another try. Don't get me wrong, I do think Black Gold is very impressive, just didn't stand out to me as one of *the* Horner scores to hear in the past several years. If my second listen yields different results I'll be back with a retraction! smile

Been playing this score pretty much nonstop since I picked it up a few months back. I don't think it's as strong as "The Karate Kid" (my fave Horner score since "A New World"), but most certainly a wonderful effort.

The film was re-titled "Day of the Falcon" for domestic distribution.

Well Jim, the first track is by far the weakest, so you're in for a treat afterwards.
Hope you manage to pick up a copy.

Yes Indeed.
I think it's fair to say that James Horner was on quite a film score renaissance after AVATAR (which I agree was a tad disappointing, after the two years he spent working on it, though still pretty good more often than not).
BLACK GOLD, together with THE KARATE KID, FOR GREATER GLORY, AMAZING SPIDERMAN, WOLF TOTEM and LIVING IN THE AGE OF AIRPLANES are all really strong scores in his resume.
All inspired sounding.
Like he was enjoying his composing again. And fashioning a new style, allied with his old style.
I played this again this morning. Sublime.
Such a shame he was taken too early!
I do so miss a new James Horner score arriving through my door.

Hear hear! I share that sentiment, Kev. But I am enjoying the hell out of 'Glory' right now!

Couldn’t agree more Kev.
I still miss the Maestro but am very grateful that I have stacks of his brilliant scores to listen to.
Will blast Black Gold later!

Yeah, I agree. I think a big part of this was him doing foreign or non-Hollywood productions which gave him more creative freedom again. Wolf Totem and INAOA are two of his best later career scores. Karate Kid is awesome too. Not familiar with Black Gold though, I'll have to check that out!
