Drawgoon = "Actually there is one. Towards the end of the opening track, around the 5:38 mark. Easy to miss, though."

Haha, yeah. I missed it on the first two go-rounds and the fact it's in my least favourite cue didn't help, but sure enough, it's exactly where you said it is.
It's like he's T-R-Y-I-N-G RRReeeeaaallllllyyyyyyyyy hard to avoid doing it, skirting it in the build-up....and then.....
DEH DEH DEH DEEEERRRRRRR, he caves in and has to let it out!! 
Still, I'm gonna forgive him this time cos the score is so bonza!

You should just think of it as a trademark . It almost wouldn't be a Horner score without it.

I can't believe the lack of buzz around this score!
It's Horner in big, sweeping 80's style mode, with a killer main theme and some excellent suspense and action scoring.
The track Leaving As An Emissary is PRIME Horner.
I'd suggest even fans who have grown disillusioned with old Jimbo of late should give this one a go. It's seriously GREAT!!

Strange, I was expecting to really dig Black Gold but I haven't been able to appreciate it as much as a lot of folks around here. Kind of like Captain America from last year...I heard so many wonderful things and extreme high praise about the score and then when I actually listened to it from start to finish I didn't get it.
I'm always willing to admit though that maybe I wasn't in the right mood or atmosphere to appreciate these scores. For example, when I first heard Captain America I was driving to my ex-girlfriend's house (enough time to hear nearly the whole score), a relationship that was never quite right. I wasn't angry or upset per se at that exact time, but maybe my subconscious feelings towards that situation colored my perception of the score when I listened to it at that moment.
Can't remember the circumstances surrounding my first listen to Black Gold but when people in this community so vocally cheer for a new Horner score and I, a huge Horner fan, don't understand the fanfare, I'm willing to give it another try. Don't get me wrong, I do think Black Gold is very impressive, just didn't stand out to me as one of *the* Horner scores to hear in the past several years. If my second listen yields different results I'll be back with a retraction!

Man... THIS one slipped right under my radar! I didn't even know there WAS a film scored by Horner called "Black Gold"! I listened to that first track on youtube.... TEEEERIFIC! I hope it's still in print! Gotta get it!

Yes Indeed.
I think it's fair to say that James Horner was on quite a film score renaissance after AVATAR (which I agree was a tad disappointing, after the two years he spent working on it, though still pretty good more often than not).
BLACK GOLD, together with THE KARATE KID, FOR GREATER GLORY, AMAZING SPIDERMAN, WOLF TOTEM and LIVING IN THE AGE OF AIRPLANES are all really strong scores in his resume.
All inspired sounding.
Like he was enjoying his composing again. And fashioning a new style, allied with his old style.
I played this again this morning. Sublime.
Such a shame he was taken too early!
I do so miss a new James Horner score arriving through my door.

Yeah, I agree. I think a big part of this was him doing foreign or non-Hollywood productions which gave him more creative freedom again. Wolf Totem and INAOA are two of his best later career scores. Karate Kid is awesome too. Not familiar with Black Gold though, I'll have to check that out!
