Thanks LeHah...    Posted:   Apr 22, 2012 - 9:00 AM     By:   Lukas Kendall   (Member) Cable TV came to our house on Martha's Vineyard in fall 1988 (I remember because that's where Star Trek: TNG was in its initial run and we could finally watch it clearly) and the first weekend we had it, my brother and I taped a doubleheader on HBO (or maybe Showtime) of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, which we found to be a hilariously bad but somehow irresistible Star Wars knockoff. Between the rotoscoping and the sneaky inserts of Scientology mythology (the screenwriter was a Scientologist at least at the time) it is a rather bizarre and creepy experience to watch. I tried to watch it again as an adult and zzzzzzzzzz but it does remind me nostalgically of the time when anything with space and "Star" in the title was utter catnip. I do like the score and am looking forward to hearing it on BSX! Sometimes it's creepy, sometimes it's scary and sometimes it's what you'd expect from Saturday morning kid's fare. As mentioned earlier, I can't think of another animated film where the hero's girlfriend gets strangled by the villain right in front of him. I also can't think of another adventure story with a more incompetent hero. He finds this great weapon and keeps losing it, right from the get-go. He's incompetent, he's clumsy... I remember that the movie opens with people being enslaved in a mining colony and... some of them are killed off or sacrificed or something? Way dark. A little later, as the hero escapes from his underground world, after waking up to find his blood being drained by leeches, he wanders around in the swamp until he stumbles on these bizarro cyborgs who are eager to rip him to pieces and recycle his vital organs and body parts for their own bodies. Good times!    Posted:   Apr 27, 2012 - 9:36 PM     By:   Jim Barg   (Member) I vaguely remember seeing the trailer with something back in 1985 - probably the He-Man animated move, Secret of the Sword (I was 6, so He-Man and She-Ra were big in the Barg household) - and man, I wanted to see it SO BAD. Never did, though. Kind of glad I didn't, because it probably would have scared the bejesus out of me. (My family saw Fantasia in theatres that year, and someone couldn't handle Night on Bald Mountain very well...) Same here Just finished listening to Starchaser, the Star Wars influences are definitely there but it manages to set iself apart quite nicely. Get's better with each listening. I vaguely remember when this used to play all the time in the 80's on cable. Power of good music... I actually recognized some of it's themes. Once again... We should probably consider closing our Netflix account... seems like we do this all the time and could have bought the DVDs for the money we spend renting them. It's not...bad, exactly, but hues to closely to the Star Wars template in terms of plotting and characterization that it's kind of astonishing. The animation isn't half-bad (the backgrounds are especially nice), but the voice acting and dialogue are pretty mediocre. Andrew Belling's score is the best thing about it. I did in fact see this on HBO when I was 12 (well, 14) and was fascinated! I caught the second half of it and had no idea what was happening...except for the fact that I had seen Star Wars. Anyone who grew up on anime knows animation can be more than Hanna Barbara and Disney. But it cribbed Star Wars really bad and the animation wasn't very good.
