So, this new Lord Of The Rings is set thousands of years before the events in the book. Good, they now have free range to do whatever they like in Middle Earth. Hopefully a bit bloodier & earthier than the trilogy, I don't necessarily mean shagging, but a bit less twee, after Game Of Thrones there's no going back, & it won't have annoying characters like Pippin, Merry & Sam. You could always watch the Soviet version of LOTR. Can't get much earthier than this... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/05/soviet-tv-version-lord-of-the-rings-rediscovered-after-30-years I read & enjoyed the books in the early seventies, & loved the films at the cinema (as they were released, one a year), & I decided to look at the extended cuts a few months ago, & the first film still worked for me, but 2 & 3 not so much. Sam is such an arse crawler (& worse in the books), & Pippin & Merry, bloody hell. I think I've had enough of that story, & it'll be interesting to see what stories they come up with.

In the original LOTR films I liked all the characters, even those more comedic who became less so as the films played further. The only thing I didn't like pertained to Legolas and Gimli, and their dialogues. At some point in time, they played so light-heartedly in the grimmest of circumstances so as to take away from the gravity of those circumstances. In Return Of The King, they no longer seemed to be in peril at any time, and with Legolas his combat exploits began to comes across as super-human (super-elvish). Am looking forward to the series (on BluRay!), *if* they can reach the quality of Jackson's films.

I was really impressed with the visual scope and effects but I really didn't feel anything while it was all going on. The protagonists became "supermen" and I really never felt their lives were in danger.
