I hope I don't get a kick in the teeth for this opinion but... Always thought that PD had downgraded when he went to play in Dallas instead of making more MFA shows. Of course, I was a very young kid too and boy, did this guy impress me.
It's funny how I watch some of these shows today and they still have the same impact on me. I always thought that if someday I could watch them, I'd find them boring, full of plotholes, but no... I just look beyond the bad - actually see no bad - just a fun thrill ride.
...if good money comes of my overtime, I might just throw it to buy the legal dvds...

It's almost like they designed that sub with two things in mind: make it look something like the Discovery from 2001 and yet also include a standard submarine top so they got to use the mock up of the Seaview or the Tigerfish from Ice Station Zebra (also MGM so most likely if true).

Soon as I get some extra scratch, I'm getting this show.

I ordered the DVD package deal on 7-23 and it hasn't come yet. Has anybody gotten theirs yet? I know my card was billed for it.

I got a shipping notice on Friday or Saturday.

My DVD set arrived today!

My set arrived today and I watched the pilot film. I was struck by how much Mr Schubert's plan resembled Stromberg's plan in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. Can anyone say which one was written first?

We know THE SPY WHO LOVED ME borrowed a scene from THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN: the pre-credits bit where Bond and a girl are lying in front of a fireplace closely resembles a scene from "The Solid Gold Kidnapping" (1973), a TV movie which itself borrowed shamelessly from THUNDERBALL.

A nice thing in the MFA pilot is that most of the best music cues play mostly unobstructed by dialogue.

In reference to Mark's sensitive eyes, Dr Merrill says "We're preparing a pair of dichroic glasses for him."

I wonder if that was baloney, or was there some real science behind using dichroic glass for this purpose.

Duffy had to wear painted scleral contact lenses for the role of Mark Harris. Scleral lenses are huge, covering the whole eye, whites and all, and you have to stick them in under the eyelids. In an interview, sympathetic Victor Buono said it was "like acting with golf balls stuck in your head."

The Navy ship used in MFA's pilot movie was the Elk River, and it really was a Deep Submergence Support Ship at the time:

So much fun to watch it again after all these years.

Just got done watching the pilot. Victor Buono was so delightful...

And I'm pretty sure Man From Atlantis and Spy Who Loved Me were more or less concurrent....

Quick research indicates Man From Atlantis aired in March 77 and Spy was released in July 77.

Must have been something in the air...

The submarine "Cetacean" was one of the coolest things about MAN FROM ATLANTIS. I've often wondered what became of the miniature. The answer: it was auctioned off last year, as detailed here...

I have the NBC studios pre-production concept art for the Cetacean up on Ebay at the moment
