One interesting idea might be to re-record only the missing "Harem" cues (since it doesn't seem like they exist, though of course we don't know exactly how exhaustive the search has been), then release a complete presentation of the score combining the newly recorded cues with what survives of the original recording.

That's a wonderful idea.

I second that! wonderful channel, a real treasure trove. Hope it continues.

I never gave much attention to Scott and immediately became a fan listening to a King Kong Lives suite. There's a lot of his I don't quite love on its own, but a lot to admire!

Scott is very hit or miss with me. I love some of his stuff like Final Countdown, Greystoke, Man on Fire and Shoot To Kill, but really can’t stand other scores of his. For me he def lacks when composing action music. Even parts of Kill are clunky and parts of his Kong score just sound a little cartoony missing dramatic weight.

Following up on an earlier post, I managed to watch Man on Fire. The earlier scenes with Scott Glenn and Jade Malle are quite touching and easily the superior to the proto-Taken nonsense of the second half*.

I was compelled to listen to the Varese album for the first time in years. Some marvelous music (Can you believe that the lovely and exciting "Sam Wins the Race" was dialed out of the film? Effin' Hollyweird.), but something I noticed on this listen: while definitely a Scott score, I couldn't help but notice a strong Morricone influence, probably not an accident given the film's setting. The swaggering motif in "Start of the Search" with the pedal over the blaring brass and, especially, the mechanical-sounding xylophone take on the main theme conjure the Maestro, as do cues like "Death of Creasy" and "Snake's First Victim". Of course, it could just be me.

* - A lot of familiar faces in this movie, though it seemed like they were attracted more to the free trip to Italy than the script. Also, some of the performers took me by surprise. Based on Scarface and The Secret of N.I.M.H., you'd totally expect Paul Shenar to be one of the kidnappers as opposed to the girl's father. Likewise, Joe Pesci (with an odd hairdo) is Glenn's pal. On the other hand, I wouldn't have expected Danny Aiello to be in on the scheme.

Big fan of this score, especially that big chase cue at the end.

Greystoke is a pure masterpiece, this situation is particularly damaging. If it's a question of money, crowdfunding could solve the problem. But I suppose it's a problem of rights, otherwise LLL or another label would have taken over ...

As bobbengan said earlier in this thread, John Scott felt discouraged by the low sales of his JOS CD releases over the years.

I think it's the main problem, because the rights could have been cleared, in my opinion, if he had had the will to do so. But since only a few people owned his soundtracks on JOS, he gave up.

I may be wrong, though, so if bobbengan could enlighten us?



In the 2010 LLL CD edition, I read : "sadly, no other elements were located to give this wonderful score the expanded treatment it deserves".

If they didn't ask John Scott and let the opportunity for a full edition pass, it's even more unfortunate. But I am sure that a more than complete edition (some music being new even in the film) in 2 CDs would find many fans.

A lot of really stellar material from the score is in that including the panther attack and the part where his mother is killed by the pygmies and he roars in pain over her loss.

Listened to King Kong Lives this weekend (for personal suite purposes) and had to come here to heap some praise on it.

Yes, it does have a good deal of John Williams pastiche, but all in a good way and not so in-your-face and blatant. It's a well crafted and dramatic work with a sort love theme to boot.

I hope for a deluxe treatment one day.



I seem to recall bob saying this wasn't one of Scott's favorites amongst his body of work.

I wonder if there is more music from Greystoke we have yet to hear. A number of scenes were shot in my home town that were left out of the film's final release. Particularly memorable for me was the staging of a pheasant shoot where a number of my colleagues were enlisted as extras, as well as the actual Lord of the Manor, whose lands they used. I was sorry when the scenes were cut out. At least I managed to get Scott's autograph, courtesy of the location manager.
