Absolutely fantastic music from Bear. So many rich themes throughout, and yes, it does reward more and more with each listen. I wouldn't place it above Shore's work for the films, but if/when Bear has created a mountain of material for several seasons of ROP, his work might just surpass what Shore created.

it is a shame that he was not allowed to use some of the same themes from the movies but in a way, it's allowed him to completely come up with his own material. And so far, it's incredible stuff. Some of his very best work. I don't think much of the show itself - although I've slightly warmed up to it - but the upcoming season has me really excited just for the new music alone.

I wonder if Season 2 will receive the same deluxe treatment as this one - and on CD - presumably from Mondo?
Hopefully if this one sells well enough, there's no reason not to.

I haven't even begun to fully digest this expansive CD set yet, but does Bear reference the Howard Shore Main Title theme within any of his episode scores?
It's a great theme and I can't recall if he used it that much (or ever) while I was watching the series (which I loved).

Having just finished my first listen-through, I didn't notice a single reference to Shore's main title music, though I suppose I could have missed a very subtle one. There are Shore influences galore throughout the score, of course, but they are more in terms of style, orchestration, and instrumental color.

I wonder if Shore's theme had even been written when McCreary worked on the series...?

From what’s been said publicly, McCreary had already scored three quarters of the season by the time Shore made his contribution.

Aye. Good point.
I hadn't considered how much work B-Mc would have already done when Shore was brought on board for the title theme.

This is quite nice.

Looking forward to the new series and their scores.

Much more palatable that this...

...which would have been more at home on his SINGULARITY concept album which was released recently.

I know it's too soon to speculate, but I wonder what the situation will be regarding the physical media releases of Series Two?
In hindsight, we've been blessed with the 2CD edition that came first on CD from Mondo (albeit a bit difficult/pricey for non-USA buyers) and then the 10 disc full scores Deluxe Edition (with book), which is a dream come true for fans of the show and its music.
Dare we dream Series Two might get a repeat representation?

I dare hope, since the physical mega set for season 1 apparently sold so well.

Aye.
I worried when I saw Amazon were offering copies for reduced prices, but I believe those were just some damaged/returned stock and hope it was a success for all involved.

I absolutely love fondling it wink

The Tom Bombadil song has grown on me quite a bit.
I don't like it as much as The Wandering Day from the first series, but it's of that ilk.
It's amazing how little 'whittle' there is from the 8 series one discs.
I'm usually cutting filler tracks here, there and everywhere from a lot of modern stuff, but most of the episode scores are jam packed with development and quality.
I will hold off listening to the new scores until I've watched series 2.
And I won't start that until all episodes are available on Amazon, so I can binge and listen to my hearts content.

I absolutely LOVE this track.
I already liked the single version that was released first, but the lovely warm underscore here from McCreary is just first rate.
Looking forward to starting Series Two, once the final episodes are on the platform.

I like most of the music of the new season so far. However, like in the case of the first season, the 2 disc album will do for me with all the highlights and concert arrangements.

You’re missing out on a lot of the best music, then. The most recent episode had one of the best episodic score albums of all, with every track fantastic… know how much made it onto the season album from it? One minute and seven seconds. The previous episodic score album was almost as good… just over three minutes of it on the season album:

I think McCreary chose to leave off some music from the season album just because it would be spoilery for the show, even with the cue titles changed.

Totally agree with Yavar.
IIRC, even that Swordfight Violin Scherzo on the first 2CD S1 release is a 2 minute-ish edited down version of a longer, 6 minute cue.
The 8 disc set is incredible, music-wise, in this modern age.
And since it has sold out at the label, I hope they repeat the venture for this new series too wink

Yes, the 10-disc set is the way to go. There's a lot more room for each score to breathe and some lovely moments of thematic underscore that were chopped out of the (very generous) 2-disc set, which is also included in the big box set, so you've got the great concert arrangements of the major themes.

I've found the second season to be a worthy continuation of established themes, though it hasn't (so far) reached the musical heights of the first season. Then again, the first season had to do A LOT of heavy lifting and world-building with all of the themes, at least 11 major ones by my count (and that doesn't include Howard Shore's title theme, which while solid, isn't utilized in McCreary's underscore).

This season we've got some lovely additions to the thematic library like Old Tom Bombadil, Rhun (very John Barry-esque to me), and Estrid... but to me it feels that much of the rest of the second season are well done reinterpretations of existing ideas from the first season. Still, eagerly looking forward to a second season box set and it should be an insta-buy for anyone who loves this kind of thematic orchestral scoring.

"...and that doesn't include Howard Shore's title theme, which while solid, isn't utilized in McCreary's underscore"
-----------------------
Indeed.
And that's something that makes me ponder some.
I'm in no way knocking the quality of the many and varied themes that Bear McC has created for this series, but I wonder why Shore's Title theme hasn't been hinted at or quoted/interpolated in any way.
Unless BMc has plans for it, further down the line?
