MORE MORRICONE, a full album dedicated to the Maestro has been released by two jazzmen, Giovanni Ceccarelli and Ferruccio Spinetti.
I bought it yesterday and find the overall result really superb. Mind that Morricone specialist Massimo Cardinaletti is thanked for "his precious suggestions in choosing the repertoire" and indeed, they didn't relay only on classics only but even picked up for instance Ricatto from La Piovra 2. Among the sounds they featured, I for instance like the idea to use the toy piano in INDAGINE SU UN CITTADINO... and in The Braying Mule. Highly recommended. Enjoy!
After reading this post I decided to buy this CD. Even though I know most themes from their original versions I think this is such a different take on them that it is well worth having and a very pleasant listen. The real test for me is how often I play it (I have so much music to choose from), and since it arrived on oct 16 I have played it a lot. The only drawback I can think of that it is too short. I hope there will be another volume 'More More Morricone'... So, thanks for bringing this to my attention.
This is rather unusual. Girl playing Ecstasy of Gold using voice and theramin. Starts off and you think wtf...but...as she builds up layers it starts to become something.
It's pretty obvious that the arrangements have not been penned by the Maestro but this concert is still pleasant to listen to. It's a bit weird to have a sparse orchestra with the whole string section, the percussionist and of course the female singer bearing masks and no audience at all but we'll have to get accustomed to it, as it seems! I like the fact they included LA CALIFFA, MARCO POLO (though played a bit too fast for my taste), THE SECRET OF THE SAHARA (which they mistakenly entitled Saharan dream, actually the name of the song), LA PIOVRA V (featuring the "mafia intro" as I call it), etc.
Sad news to report here but I don’t think it has been mentioned so far: at the time when writing these lines, the funeral ceremony of Sijbold Tonkens is taking place in Groningen, The Netherlands. Though not a member of this board as far as I can tell, Sijbold was a huge fan of the Maestro and connoisseur of soundtracks in general who contributed significantly to the Ennio Morricone Musicography in the 90’s as well as to the website SoundtrackCollector. He was therefore known from many readers of this board. I met him on several occasions in Holland, Belgium and France and I can say he was a very friendly, kind and always positive person. He was only 63 and will be missed. My deepest condolences to his family. RIP Sijbold.
P.S: Coincidentally, Henk de Boer who also collaborated with Martin van Wouw on the aforementioned EMM also passed away last week, one day before Sijbold. RIP Henk.
Rip Henk and Sijbold. Thats sad news, two huge Morriconians for many decades. Thanks for posting Laurent. Very fitting that we remember them in this thread, of all threads.
I only met Sijbold once, years ago, he certainly was passionate and knowledgeable collector. With his and Henk's passing, the filmmusic community has certainly lost prominent members.
Condolences to those who were nearest. Ik zal ze missen.
For uk fsmers tonight (friday) 10pm is Story of Fairytale of new york on bbc4 where the pogues discuss their song. This is the documentary (i think) where they talk about the influence of Ennio's OuatiAmerica theme and how the film was permanently on their bus video for that whole tour and is the inspiration for the first 5 notes of the song
