I'd be happy to interview Mark Isham some day, one of my favorite film composers ever since I saw October Sky.

Could discuss replacing Jerry on The Public Eye for sure, but also their shared interest in solo trumpet! (And The Black Dahlia is the best modern noir score in the Chinatown tradition...)

So yeah, good idea...but not him.

Thanks, jb! Glad you enjoyed.

that theme is VERY similar to the "Chiming Watch" theme from FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE.Could jerry be 'covering his tracks. with that claim?

Love both themes but I think they're fairly different. Though I guess I can hear what you're talking about, it's a similarity that has never occurred to me before.

Lukas and Bob both starting labels.in.their.teens!
Amazing!

I know Lukas was a teen when he started FSM, but wasn't he in his 20s by the time he produced his first album? (The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3)

Yavar

Yes, Lukas started the old FSM newsletter when in high school, but the record label didn't happen until he was in his 20's and out of college, which I think started with Pelham 123 on Retrograde Records.

Yeah. Lukas didn't start the label till he was ' middle aged'.
Point is the newsletter/ magazine was the precursor.

Re: Goldsmith planned re-recordings

Im sad they didn't get to do SPARTACUS.
But, the other titles - esp. his own scores- are well represented on disc in their original recordings.

I never cared for his rerecords of PATTON, AGONY etc. /.
Not a big fan of his concerts either. Then again I never cared for concerts of film music from any composer
,
for me, the osts are perfection!

Nice job, Yav!

Great interview!!

I won't say I wasn't a little heartbroken when he talked about Jerry possibly scoring Arthur C. Clarke's 2061.

Was the CONAN piece conducted by Basil in concert?

Any chance of maybe getting Paul Verhoeven or Joe Dante on the show?

Just goes to show there's no stopping someone who has a vision -- and wealthy grandparents! wink

I'm thrilled Robert Townson went into business, don't get me wrong, but there's obviously more to his story than he is letting on. Doug Fake approached Fox in the early 80s about releasing The Final Conflict -- and was turned away because he had no experience in producing a record. And this was some who was already running a business. Yet a teenage boy was granted the album rights? Clearly Townsend's family had connections or a lot of influence of some kind. They were obviously loaded (most grandparents, no matter how doting, don't throw away $20,000 on their grandson's hobby). I'd like to know the full story.

I really hope Townson gets to see a proper Love Field release.

Phil Spector was a teen when he started also!

My grandmother wouldn't have given me $20 to spend on "that junk" (i.e. anything that wasn't an Andy Williams album).

Yavar, all of your interviews have been really good - honestly, at first I skipped them, but while waiting for new episodes of the Odyssey I went back and listened to them as was surprised how interesting they were - but your interview with Robert Townson will be hard to top! He was really engaging and articulate, and such an insider with great memories. Excellent work!

And excellent editing by Jens, especially with the interspersed music always being the exact piece from the exact release they were discussing!

Excellent interview, Yavar.
I'm not sure if I missed something, but I had the sense that the Varese Club series won't be the same now that Mr. Townson's gone. He seemed to allude to the notion that his connections were what made some of the releases possible. Any sense of what these means for future club releases, especially something like the long-awaited expanded Air Force One?

The club will be continuing. The team over there has some great releases planned and are working with the studios, composers, their estates and/or the original mixing/editing folks to find and ensure quality sources.

Club isn't going anywhere and the amount of cool stuff they have coming, oh you will enjoy it. I was lucky enough to assist on one of them prior to Varèse letting go 60% of their staff at Christmas. Cary Mansfield who is now head of A&R has been producing cool soundtracks for the last 7 or so years at Varèse and before that he has a 25+ year career of producing thousand+ albums with some of the biggest names in the music business. With the help of Bryon Davis who consults for them, Mike Matessino occasionally doing his magic and all the other key players, Cary has all the team he needs to keep producing cool stuff. Bryon and I knew what titles to give the Deluxe treatment to and they are working on many of them right now.

These expanded scores take time and sometimes longer than expected as like I've said it before and most labels will back me up, approving these things is at the bottom the very bottom of studios TO DO list, unfortunately.

With every producer at Varèse they were only as good as the team behind them who assist and work with them. smile

Great interview Yavar!
