Glowing eyed Leopard represents extinction? Didn't know that. I don't quite remember any extinction analogies in the film either. Man-apes were doing just fine, they just got a boost in intelligence when the Monolith appeared.

The tribe we're shown is at the mercy of both predators, other tribes and, until they can start killing those pig things, starvation.

Of course a little known piece of trivia is that the leopard is clearly a replicant. The eyes.

Its supposed to be survival of the fittest. Stupid aliens messed up everything.

Which have you played more - the classical or rejected ost?

The 1996 Rhino edition would have the edge on the Alex North album.
I think they did a great presentation--exactly what a fan of the movie and the music would like.
I also really like the nice booklet and the bonus track of HAL's greatest hits.

I think I'm due to give the Alex North CD another revisit.

I'm not a fan of the movie so I've never had an interest in the classical track, and why I rarely play the North version.

Nice to see the back cover image at last.

Last time I checked, I only pissed urine, but I have been known to poop parties.

steffromuk: I find a lot of (if not all) the latest cover arts from Mondo to be really uninspired and quite underwhelming to be frank. The artists often focus on an anecdotal detail from the movie and build their cover around it, resulting in something un-noticeable that misses the essence of the film...There's a trend among illustrators to produce something at the edge of being off mark to look edgy and original. but 99% of them fail.

I guess my post was also off topic, sorry.

I have no wish to convince you every Mondo vinyl sleeve is fab, and criticizing art is everybody's right.

But all these complaints about vinyl shouldn't be done anymore and the art defies my preconceptions and the hipsters like it so I hate it and want to retaliate electronically is just mindless ranting from witless curmudgeons.

Hollywood is busy spoon-feeding you all the conventionalizations you could ask for and then some. Subscribe to DisneyPlus if Mondo is too challenging for you.

Your aesthetic cowardice is not edgy and hip, just pathetic. Let Trump handle all that. At least he's entertainingly philistine.

Does an album of classical music warrant new "edgy" cover art? It's just old wine in a new bottle.

Last Child: Does an album of classical music warrant new "edgy" cover art? It's just old wine in a new bottle.

In terms of commercial music marketing, all the musical content is considered Classical. In strict musicological terms, none of it is. All the 2001 music tracks were written after the Classical period.

Anyway, you’re just being quibblesome. Can’t somebody come up with some real appreciation for this music? It’s as if Mondo took a leak in everybody’s yard somehow.

Oh, well. The curmudgeonly spirit seems to have taken over on this thread. I’m not even buying this record. No Karajan Zarathustra.

Can't argue with you there (heh, heh).

So your defense was pro bono? I feel played.

Funny how some criticize the art while others feel the need to criticize the person. I see the ape-man is hiding behind the rocks. Wonder if he knows there's an ape-man eating leopard on the other side of the rocks? Run away! Run Away!

The leopard and apeman looking right at the viewer, along with the weird art style (posterize? graphic novel?), breaks down the 4th wall. Looks more like an advertisement than art. But if that's what the kids like these days, who cares. I'm no fan of the Mona Lisa, and I would have said so to Leonardo. Now if she were reading the Magna Carta, you got something there.

Agreed, but could've been worse. For kicks and giggles I "googled" 2001 art last night. The amount of avant-garde designs I saw was mind numbing. I think the problem (for me) is they're trying to spin something that is visually iconic.

Ya know, the true significance in the news of this release is that it
tells us a hi-res download version of the album should be forthcoming.

Consider: about five months after the Elmer Bernstein score for Ghostbusters is released on CD and download by Sony, along comes Mondo with a nice-looking 2-LP package.

Considering the top-flight remaster here on 2001 (Abbey Road Studios!), I think it’s safe to say that WarnerMedia has similar plans for this proven seller.

Your example appears to be the reverse of your prediction: it's a digital release followed by an analog release.
But to make your point, Waxworks released PHASE IV (slightly edited) on vinyl, then Lalaland released a CD of the identical tracks.
I'd like to get the few underscore cues from the CRUISING album but Waxworks has no plans for a digital release. Hopefully some other company will do it.

Too bad 2001 wasn't scored by Charles Bernstein--something in a "White Lightning" vein.
Could have been cool.

So I'm looking at the back cover art of the Mondo.
Does anyone else see genitalia in the rocks behind the ape?

Typical FSM habitual poster dopiness on the "issue" of the cover.

For those who haven't seen, or are simply too dense, to acquire the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the cover represents the moment in the history of human emergence when the proto-humanoids of the movie's introductory sequence sit poised between extinction, represented by the glowing-eyed leopard, and the limitless future, represented by the monolith.

As for the "key art" complaint: you obviously aren't familiar with Mondo's vinyl M.O. The whole point is to do something striking and fresh. Not key-art.

Thank you.

Double thank you.
