Yes, Laurent, the main theme from DON GIOVANNI IN SICILIA does also crop up again in the track you mentioned.
I don´t know if you are familiar with Bacalov´s CUORI SOLITARI and the superb track "Fino all´orizzonte" from that score, but there is a really striking similarity with the ascending string theme in the middle part of the CIVILTÀ main theme "Il mare". In the "Il mare" sample this theme appears from minute 0:52 onwards. This is of course no wonder as Nicolai had also conducted the Bacalov score in 1969.

There is some wrong information on the Kronos website about the release date of the Edipan LP of CIVILTÀ DEL MEDITERANEO:

"Released originally in 1971 on the EDI PAN label, the album soon disappeared because like so many of Nicolai’s releases it was a limited pressing. 49 years later Kronos Records release this for the first time ever on CD format."

Actually, the LP was released 10 years later in 1981. The same error can also be seen on the Soundtrack Collector website. I suppose that it comes from the fact that the drawing which can be seen on the front cover of the LP stems from 1971. And on the back cover of the LP it is mentioned that this drawing is from 1971. Therefore some people probably have thought 1971 would also be the release date of the LP, but this was of course not the case.

CIVILTÀ DEL MEDITERRANEO is a favourite LP so I am certainly going to have a CD copy.

A quick search suggests that the TV series was shown between 1972 and 1976. I assume that the music was recorded during this period. In other words before DON GIOVANNI IN SICILIA? One theme (Rime classiche) is a new version of the main theme from JUSTINE.

I don't think I have the LP score by de Masi, so it will be nice to hear it for the first time.

Actually, the Soundtrack Collector website does not show any date at all for the release of the Edipan LP. It does show a 1979 date for the show itself. Is that incorrect? The IMDB doesn't seem to have an entry for the show.

Yes Stefan, I have the Saimel CD of CUORI SOLITARI and like it very much. I just compared both tracks and you're absolutely right about this striking similarity between them. So it means Nicolai didn't copy only Morricone but also others! Just kidding of course...

Sorry, Disocgs and not Soundtrack Collector shows the wrong date 1971 for the release of the Edipan LP:
https://www.discogs.com/Bruno-Nicolai-Civilta-Del-Mediterraneo/release/2377835

But 1979 as date for the show itself is also incorrect.
There were apparently 13 episodes of this TV docu-series which were produced between 1972 and 1978, only five of them directed by Folco Quilici, the other ones by Carlo Alberto Pinelli and Carlos Villardebo (who get also mentioned on the back cover of the LP).
The series received a critics`award in France in 1977:

If you have some support for the 1981 release date of the LP, you can change the date in Discogs and add the date in Soundtrack Collector.

If you have some support for the 1981 release date of the LP, you can change the date in Discogs and add the date in Soundtrack Collector.

Even the exact pressing date of the LP has been stamped on the runout groove of the disc itself.
It reads there: 18-11-81 (= November 18th 1981).

And above all, not even Nicolai´s quite impressive documentary scores L´ALPIN L´È SEMPRE QUEL or L´ARMA MERAVIGLIOSA have surfaced on CD throughout the last years.

Coincidence! I've just burned my old double-LP of L´ARMA MERAVIGLIOSA to CD

PAOLO E FRANCESCA and L'ALPIN L'È SEMPRE QUE are certainly my favourite LPs still unreleased, although I'm happy with my LP rips. In fact themes from the latter are re-used in L'ARMA MERAVIGLIOSA and ELEONORA.

LETTERE DAL FRONTE, CIAO ITALIA, ALLERO AL TRENO and GOODBYE MARIE are the other LP "soundtracks" that could be released. All of them are good, but LETTERE DAL FRONTE is probably my least favourite.

Giugno '44 - Sbarcheremo in Normandia (1968) is probably my favourite unreleased score (no LP). It is quite orchestral and lovely. I am surprised Beat Records only released three tracks on a compilation LP in 1976 (CD in 1993) and nothing else since then. Maybe the score was very short or the tapes were lost since the 70s?

I used to have a CD of Mio Nome e Shangi Joe (My Name Is Shanghai Joe) on Point records. Nice score, but terrible sound, it sounded like a tenth generation copy of something that was recorded in a vast tile warehouse. I don't know if the later release on GDM sounded any better (but it's well out of print, $50 at SAE).

Ah, that rang a bell. It's so long since I've listened to any of this stuff, & I've had a few clear-outs in the last few years. Anyway, I had Have A Good Funeral, which I don't seem to have anymore. I still have the echoey sounding Shangai Joe on Point records (paired with i Giorni Della Violenza) & I'm pleased to discover that I still have Indio Black, I think I'll stick that on the iPod.

Bill, a pity you don't have L'ALPIN anymore 'cause it's great. I nowadays seldom play LP's but just made an exception for this one. I guess this score must have been recorded shortly after Morricone's LA TENDA ROSSA. Probably due to the common snowy context, there are indeed similarities in terms of lyricism between both scores, especially in the main theme. Listen to the airy strings and to the chorus in particular. Otherwise, my favourite tracks are La lunga marcia / Cento anni di storia (superb use of the mandola there), Ricordi di casa, Cime, deserti, ambe e steppe (great hammered piano in this one) & Il vecchio e il bocia. All these cues feature superb orchestrations with harpsichord, piano, strings, chorus, and belong to the best Nicolai I know. The harmonica is also very much present throughout the score and I assume it was played by Franco de Gemini. Logically, the horn is also used, for instance in La sentinella e la montagna.
I don't have L'ARMATA MERAVIGLIOSA but indeed remember hearing it a long time ago and enjoying it too.
Let's hope for a CD release of L'ALPIN, possibly expanded.

L´ALPIN L´E´SEMPRE QUEL was composed in 1972 and is also one of my favourite Nicolai scores. The main theme is indeed very similar to the one of THE RED TENT - that´s unmistakable, but it doesn´t bother me at all in this case as Nicolai has written such a splendid and touching symphonic score.
The documentary film from 1972 is rather short and not even one hour long:
https://trentofestival.it/archivio/1974/lalpin-le-sempre-quel/

Therefore I don´t think that there will be much more music available than what was on the former LP. Certainly Kronos will be the one and only label which may release this on CD in the future..
