Nice catch! I played the heck out of Super Metroid when it came out in '94, but not sure I ever made the connection. But I can hear definite similarities! I think some of that game's soundtrack was also inspired by Goldsmith's Alien as well. Always fun to hear when video game music is inspired by or pays homage to an existing piece.
A lot of older video game soundtracks, especially from the NES/SNES and Genesis eras (1983-1998) have tracks that were obviously inspired by either film scores or Top 40 songs. For whatever reason, probably because video game music was pretty obscure back then and many games were developed overseas, I don't believe any lawsuits were ever filed. Although I think the original Ninja Gaiden arcade game had a track that was too similar to Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man', that the developers were either fearful of a lawsuit or actually hit with a legal letter threatening action, because that track was replaced on the subsequent NES conversion of the game.
I know there are tons of other examples, but I can't think of many at the top of my head right now. I know Cpt. Tsubasa, a Famicom soccer game by Tecmo, has a title screen track that sounds like a straight rip-off of Michael Sembello's Maniac'. The NES Dick Tracy game's ending music sounded a lot like The Beach Boys' 'Help Me Rhonda', too! Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on the Famicon/NES has a track from the final stage with Dracula that also is really similar to Hermann's Vertigo score. I am sure a lot of video game composers were inspired by film scores and radio hits. I also remember Pilotwings 64 for the N64 had a few tracks that you could tell were heavily inspired by Steve Winwood, Peter Gabriel and Sade. The Battle Music in Mario Kart 64 also always sounded extremely similar to the Pointer Sisters' song from Beverly Hills Cop, 'Neutron Dance'.
Anyways, being a huge video game music fanatic myself, I have come across a lot over the years and it is always pretty fun when you notice it!
Enjoyed reading the first ten pages of people arguing over this being a two disc set. Can't wait for the same when LLL releases TWOK. It's the circle of life!

I never questioned this being 2 CDs. The album is substantially different on III from the film.
Obviously I'll be interested to see what they do for the "new number 2". And I'll almost certainly buy it. But until I see otherwise my suspicion is that if CD's were 100-110 minutes long this would be the film presentation and a handful of alternates. But since they aren't they will (my guess is) include the LP presentation on a 2nd disc along with other alternates because the space is there and it would be the best listening experience.
TOTAL guess.
I actually listen to the LP version of Search for Spock a fair bit. Its missing a lot but its got a great flow.

Indeed, I actually prefer the album version of Stealing the Enterprise. The FSM release really fills it out too.

I always find it really entertaining to find the connections in older videogame music. EARTHBOUND has tons of references to various songs of its time, including an actual sample from a Ric Ocasek song. But it also has lots of references to The Beatles too.
The stuff in Mario Kart I have always been intrigued by because I’m not sure how to even categorize the music. But funk / pop makes sense, and I know there are a lot of jazz influences as well.
