Ah yes, thanks Steve and Last. I was thinking of "Friends and Enemies". There's nothing like that guitar piece in the film at all, is there? Regarding "Fifty Miles of Desert" - so this was written for the trailer and then re-recorded for the album, along with the rest of the score (including arrangements and additions such as the rock guitar on "Friends and Enemies")?
Am I following this correctly? I haven't seen the film since the late '70s, and although I "have" the LP, it's thousands of miles away.
I don't think the guitar section of that cue is in the film as such. More like some impro for the album sessions.
It's very plausible that fifty Miles Of Desert could also have been an unused cue for the scene where Miles and his big goon pursue Hemlock out into the Desert. Makes sense since we see the odometer in Hemlocks 4x4 click over At 50.0. I'd love a release of the original tracks. They have a whole new unique and discreet sound that set them apart from the album rerecord, much like Earthquake.
I watched this film a few years ago, and the film tracks are indeed a very different-sounding performance of the music than the re-recorded LP program. I think, as with "The Fury," I prefer the album re-recording, but great music is great music & the film tracks were wonderful too. It would be fantastic for a record company to re-issue the re-recording with the film tracks - I imagine somebody is working on it, but as I understand it Universal only allows one project to be worked on a time (?), so it's probably further down in the pipeline than something like Goodwin/Mancini's "Frenzy," or any number of other potential Universal projects.
