SPIN-OFF PILOT:

During the run of the show, but aired later, a loose spin-off pilot was done called "M Station: Hawaii".

The full pilot film is one hundred minutes, but no full load is available. These are the longest parts of it I could find. Instead of highlight times (for the second video), I just made a suite (which also covers the first video). I'll do highlight times when the full pilot is available, not a section.

Some characters made appearances from the series, including Truck, who was introduced in the last season or two of the show. Jack Lord directed it and Morton Stevens scored it.

First 19:00 minutes (with commercials):
https://archive.org/details/m-station-hawaii-incomplete-tcn-9-1983

Highlights:
  • 6:21 in.
  • 10:50 in. This catchy piece is presumably what the theme music would have been (since it also appears as the end credits, too).^
  • 13:34 in.

Another twelve minutes of the pilot:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGhSK6Up9mU

    (Note to Me: 0:00, 7:07, 10:15; 11:34: CREDIT)

If anybody has the full pilot is quality like the Youtube link (or better) and is willing to give me a copy, I'll make suites from the whole thing. I'll donate the DVD-R of the pilot to the local library (assuming somebody sends it to me on DVD-R). They don't even have "Hawaii Five-O", so at least they'd have this.

EDIT: I eventually got a copy of the pilot and made three suites covering Stevens' score.

I remember watching M Station: Hawaii on TV years ago and thinking "man, those submarine special effects are rubbish." and "what does that Hawaiian writing in the end credits mean?"

    REVIVAL PILOT:

In 1997 a revival pilot was shot. Another one of those 1980's/1990's series that tried to continue an old series or continue a film and not be a remake, this dated-looking pilot starred Gary Busey. A number of the original series' cast made appearances, some more than quick guest spots. Even Jack Lord is there and gets to say "Book him, Dano". Heck, the pilot opens with a long appearance by Dano.

    SPOILERS AFTER THE HIGHLIGHTS.

    Hawaii Five-O"
    By: ?????
    fiveohomepage.com/97pilot/97pilot.mp4

    Highlights:
  • 1:17 in.
  • 5:16 in.^
  • 11:25 in.
  • 14:34 in.
  • 16:19 in. Short theme outtro. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 23:02 in.
  • 25:15 in. Short theme outtro.^
  • 27:57 in.^
  • 29:06 in.^
  • 32:31 in. Short theme outtro. And the cue after the commercial break.^
  • 37:52 in.^
  • 39:44 in.
  • 43:07 in. Short theme outtro. And the cue after the commercial break.^

For the guys here: 34:52 in. You're welcome.
And 38:54 in. Adam Sandler: "Nippolah!"

Unfortunately, the pilot has no typed-out end credits cast/crew credits, and since the composer is not credited in the opening either, I have no idea who scored it. I've looked around online and come up empty. BMI and ASCAP are of no help since any composer could have easily have contributed to the original series. The director doesn't have a website, so I can't contact him to inquire. Maybe he has a Facebook or Twitter and somebody can take the initiative to contacted Bradford May. I also have no idea who did the new theme arrangement (which I don't care for).

Now, having said that, I'm almost 100% positive the score is by Mark Snow. It's got his sound all over nearly every cue, and one cue ends with the "Hawaii Five-O" theme on solo brass, which sounds just like the closing X-Files theme bit at the end of the cue "Corn Copters" from the first film "The X-Files: Fight the Future". It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out he scored it.

    SPOILERS
Actor Kam Fong returned as Chin Ho from the original series. There was, however, just one minor problem: China Ho was killed off in the original series.

So, how did this happen? Well, Stephen J. Cannell fessed up that when writing this, he only watched a number of key episodes of the series and didn't know Chin Ho had been killed off. However, it takes two to tango and blame also lies with Kam Fong, who apparently conveniently forgot to mention his character was killed off; so did the rest of the original cast (how convenient). Maybe he desperately wanted a paycheck. Who knows.

    REMAKE:

In 2010 a remake TV series began. It ran for ten seasons before getting cancelled.

The show kept the theme music by Morton Stevens. It used the same character names, and even had a new Wo Fat.

Brian Tyler and Keith Power scored all ten seasons, though the IMDb credits indicate (if accurate) Tyler didn't do eighty-three episodes, suggesting they were solos by Power.

    FILM:

There is an in development listing on IMDb for a film, apparently going back to 2017. Only one actor is listed and the character he is playing, he played in the remake TV series, suggesting a movie for the series was going to be made. But as it's now over three years later and the series is cancelled, it's unlikely to happen.

    PILOTS???:

One webpage says that before the 2010 remake series, there were a number of failed attempts that only went as far as a pilot. So far, I can only find the 1997 pilot and no further info' on other pilots being made.

There is info about pilots and movies on this page on my H50 site:

    http://fiveohomepage.com/tv-movie.htm

Most of this info is very old, out of date, etc.

Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero developed a script for a remake of H50 prior to the one which ran from 2010-2020. Info about that is here:

    http://fiveohomepage.com/bernero-script.htm

Bernero actually posted to the old forum on my site about this project:

http://www.fiveohomepage.com/gbarchived/gbaug08.htm (see near the top of the page)

There was further discussion the next month (see bottom of the page, work your way up):

    BRUCE BROUGHTON:

These are the two season five episodes that Broughtfan said Bruce Broughton did some additional original scoring for but received no credit.

Please note that cues I may highlight, may be tracked. With such a wealth of material on the show, I'm not going to be able to recall everything.

    "The Child Stealers" (5.14)
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6hvl1u (in English)

    Highlights:
  • 0:59 in. Kind of sounds familiar, so it might be tracked.^
  • 16:50 in.^
  • 18:18 in.
  • 34:58 in.^
  • 36:35 in.^
  • 39:50 in.^
  • 41:47 in.^
  • 47:35 in.^

2:47 in: I think that's tracked. It's got that four-note repeating idea that Don B. Ray used to use a lot.

6:59 in: I'm sure that's tracked Stevens scoring. Pretty sure it's from that episode with the old guy robber.

28:54 in: pretty sure that's tracked.

    28:30 in: airplane porn.

"The Diamond That Nobody Stole" (5.23)
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6lc92t (in German)

    Highlights:
  • 12:25 in.^
  • 18:17 in.^
  • 22:41 in.^
  • 25:23 in.^
  • 28:46 in.^
  • 31:31 in.^
  • 32:52 in.
  • 36:07 in. You know, it just occurred to me: if you took the music away from these scenes, how truly boring they would be. It would be like the car version of curling.^
  • 44:52 in.

4:11 in: pretty sure that's tracked. 6:38 it gets cool; wonder which episode that was from (anybody know off hand?).

    13:59 in: same tracked cue.

    ADDITIONAL, UNCREDITED, STOCK MUSIC COMPOSERS:

Culled from ASCAP and BMI. Some of these could be from the new series. In no special order:

  • David Arnold. (listed with Paul Cartledge) (ASCAP also listed them with Philip Jewson)
  • Clarence Carpenter.
  • Jack Pleis.
  • Ray Hiendorf.
  • Solomon Kamahele.
  • Auguste Maurice Jean. (listed with somebody else with the incomprehensible name: "JeanJean Faustin Paul Irenee")
  • Martin L. Klein. (listed as a co-composed on some episodes of "Gunsmoke" that Broughton scored, so I have to assume he worked again for Bruce here)
  • "Hooper Lester Joseph III" -- you decide how that's supposed to go.
  • Leon Klatzkin.
  • Lester Hooper.
  • Paul Koslo.
  • Hermine Hilton. (listed with Brian F. Neary)
  • Dean Bentley and Ian Blurton.
  • Steven M. Stern.
  • Stuart A. Hart and Tom Hirschmann.
  • Keao Costa.
  • Joong Shin.

Normally this would be where I sadly inform you there has been no release of the show's scoring, but there was! An old LP of original recordings by Morton Stevens, was released decades back. FSM issued that on CD and it's still available:
    http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/14350/HAWAII-FIVE-0/

Years ago either at the b]Intrada forum or here, Roger or Doug said they were working on releasing Broughton's scoring. Now, I seriously doubt -- even fans of Bruce as they are -- would be working on a release that skips scoring from all the other composers, so I like to personally think a set of Volume 1 scoring was being put together. However, the lawsuit of Stevens' theme music, likely had put any release from any label, on hold until the lawsuit is over (gotta know what to credit and who to pay, I would guess). Sad.

Not all videos were on the same channel for later seasons, as I recall. And the 1997 pilot might still be there.

I'm putting in new links for season one, so go take a look...

    SPIN-OFF PILOT:

During the run of the show, but aired later, a loose spin-off pilot was done called "M Station: Hawaii"

This wasn't a spin-off at all; it was made by many alumni from the show as well as being the only thing Jack Lord's production company Lord And Lady Enterprises seems to have ever made... (I assume if the company had had a logo Morton Stevens have written its music).

I have updated the pilot listing to include a working list of episode scores that track score from the pilot. I can't memorize an entire score like that right away, so undoubtedly I have missed episodes.

If anybody knows any season three to the final season episodes that have tracked score from the pilot, please mention them. And any episodes that track the season one episode "Samurai".

Will we ever get a boxset of some of the best music made for television?

So many composers involved, various styles and some of the best works of Stevens and Shores in my opinion.

They probably will publish - if ever! - music from the remake version before any of 12 seasons of original compositions.

At least, thank you so much for posting the originals before they got deleted !!

The pilot was made during the hiatus between Season 11 and 12. When it didn't sell, the "Truck" character was simply brought over into Five-O's last season.

    Hey Justin,

The fourth season ep "Air Cargo--Dial For Murder" includes (in final act) a Stevens' 5-0 theme variation originally written for "Samurai" (accompanying McGarrett's drive to Tokura's residence) alternating with Shores' cues for "3,000 Crooked Miles to Honolulu" and "Wednesday, Ladies Free" (Shores' cues recorded earlier that season) during a pursuit scene where M(again driving) is in radio contact with HPD.

That's the only instance that comes to mind.

BTW: production code numbers would seem to indicate that "Samurai" was the first episode filmed for S1 in 1968 (pilot was filmed in late 1967 or early 1968), even though "Full Fathom Five" was broadcast first (of regular series), the latter filmed something like fifth or sixth.

That's all helpful information. That means I have to go back over episodes before "Samurai" to find tracked score.

Pretty broad question, but anybody recognize any of the score from this season six track-job episode? A lot of the score has light FX as it's quite walking around scenes, which can means serious score salvaging:

Sounds like Don B. Ray's music most of the episode.

He was musical supervisor at the time for the show, and used many times his own music.

    6 x 24 listed as "stock music".
