Quartet 16th Oct 2019 Endless Night was recorded on September 9-11, with Fernando as conductor, of course, and sounds great! But it will not be released until February/ March 2020. Fernando is really busy right now and he cannot supervise the mixes until the end of this year. Going by what was done with ‘The Bride Wore Black,’ I can imagine that the orchestral recording of ‘Endless Night’ is indeed great. But presuming the Moog (or whatever instrument is being used for the electronics) is being recorded separately, I can now imagine conductor, engineer and producer etc sitting with their headphones on and painfully looking at each other over a mixing board wondering how damn loud we’re gonna have this electronic thing ‘intruding’ on our wonderfully recorded orchestra! Ha. What works in the film may not make for the best listening experience. Given that it’s not a particularly long score, perhaps it’s a case of including versions with, and without the Moog. [Personally I think John Barry made the right choice in banishing the blaring harmonica on ‘Joe Buck Rides Again’ when re-recording Midnight Cowboy for album, but ideally I’d like both versions.] It’s going to make for an interesting album whatever. No rush, we know it’s in the works, and the waiting and expectancy is all part of the fun. I’d look forward to a Stromberg version of ‘On Dangerous Ground’ very much. And as for a possible future Herrmann from Quartet, I still think a brand new wide re-recording of ‘Beneath The Twelve Mile Reef’ would be fantastic.
