How great can it be if you haven’t listened to it in ages? I’m curious since I’m unfamiliar with this score.

I recently listened to a disc that as far as I know I haven't listened to since at least 2012. There's way too much music compared to time to listen to it.

Love this score so I'm very excited to see this release.

NIGHTBREED has been remastered in 4k and will be released in August so the timing seems appropriate.

They need to keep the Morgan Creek cut in circulation.

The Barker cut adds many great things, namely more creatures. Fleshes out plot. Has a lovely resolution. Play the Barker commentary to hear him weep at the restoration of his film, it's very moving actually.

But...

There are things in the studio cut that worked better. Better pacing. Lack of 'ol yellow teeth Anne Bobby's musical number that will have your ears begging for mercy. Lack of Anne Bobby, who flounders in most of her scenes.

I'm sure the 4K, per Clive's dictate, will only be his cut. Wish both were kept circulating.

The MCA album is perfection. All in for an expansion, but the meat, hee hee, of unreleased material will be in the final reels of Shirley Walker scoring All good, but a bit at odds with Elfman's music.

Go watch & go know. See ya in Midian....where the Monsters live. ..

Looks like it will include the theatrical cut in 4K and the director's cut in Blu-ray 1080.

I didn't realize there was a director's cut so that's something to look into.

Hellz Bellz, thank you EdG for the info.

It's a very interesting, yet flawed film, in both versions.

If this Elf isn't in your Top 10 (as it Should be!!), give either cut a view.

Intrada's release probably won't include both of these.

I have many great and favourite scores from yesteryear I haven't listened to in ages. I listened to them so much back then, they almost became ingrained in my spine. So these days, I tend to spread it out more so they won't lose their impact, and so that they become more like a 'visit with an old friend' when I finally put them on. For example, I haven't listened to my alltime favourite soundtrack JURASSIC PARK in probably 3-4 years, at least not in full. NIGHTBREED isn't on that level, of course, but I remember spinning the CD regularly when it came out, when my collection wasn't so big and there wasn't so much else to listen to with instant access online.

That's a natural thing, I guess. When I started out collecting music, I obviously had far, far fewer albums (not to mention no streaming options at all). So obviously, I had to listen to my "first" (soundtrack) albums far more frequently than I would to now with a new album. If you only have a dozen albums, you have of course less to choose from than if you have a hundred dozen albums.

Some of the scores I had "early on" were scores like STAR WARS, STAR TREK (I, II, III), JAWS (I, II, III) THE SWARM, POLTERGEIST, FIRST BLOOD, DRACULA (Williams), MONSIGNORE, A PATCH OF BLUE... all of these are still absolute favorites, and once in a while I return to them, but these days, it is comparatively rare that I listen to any given album more than once a year, whereas in the 80s, I often listened to some albums every day, or even more than once a day.

I'd forgotten the old MCA album is quite short, compared to nowadays.
Roughly 43 minutes score and a 4 minute song Country Skin (by Elfman/Boingo).
I wonder if the whole thing will fit on one CD?

I believe there's about 10 minutes of unreleased music from the film. That would definitely fit on the CD. But there might be alternate tracks, hoping that is. wink

I was reminded by JSDouglas that "Country Skin" - the tongue-in-cheek reimagining of Oingo Boingo's "Skin" from "Dark At The End Of The Tunnel" - was a cd-only bonus track in 1990 missing from lp and cassette. That was a common practice at the time with the major labels to promote the cd format with extra tracks.

I rewatched the theatrical cut the other night, and I'd be very surprised if there were only 10 minutes of additional music. There's the music for the opening murders, some additional Boone/Lori and Boone/Decker material from the start, Boone getting run over, the build-up to Meat for the Beast, additional music for Lori entering Midian, the motel murders, the cops torturing the breed, the priest approaching Baphomet, lots of bombastic action (including the Walker cue) and the final fight between Decker and Boone.

I may be very wrong, but there seemed to be a lot missing to me.

I've often wondered if someone else did the cue for the opening murders, for whatever reason -- it's VERY synthy and doesn't seem to have anything to do with gothic/orchestral sonic palette of the rest of the score.

I've always liked the film, and forgive it its trespasses -- like a lot of Barker's material, it's a jumble of interesting ideas that don't always coalesce into a solid whole. But it's ahead of its time in many ways, and it's always a fun watch.

Looking forward to this release!

Broke the "Nightbreed: Theatrical Cut" score down for fun today! From my estimate, there's between 25 and 30 minutes of unreleased music (**), not counting all the times instrumental country music is playing on radios or in the bar scenes. (A lot more than I remembered!) The original MCA album really was a great program and represented the score superbly. But it will be nice to have this memorable score expanded. I also noticed that the track "Resurrection Suite" has a 0:45-second passage (1:00 - 1:45) that I couldn't find anywhere in the theatrical cut. Maybe someone else can place it, or maybe it was a deleted scene?

00:00 - 02:40 "Main Title" (2:40)
02:40 - 03:40 "Dream" (1:00)
04:21 - 05:18 ** Boone and Lori in Bed ** (0:57)
06:21 - 07:13 ** Decker's First Killings ** (0:57)
08:01 - 09:36 ** Boone and Decker's Therapy Session ** (1:35)
10:09 - 10:34 ** Boone Wandering in Traffic ** (0:24)
12:41 - 14:36 "Scalping Time" (1:54)
15:19 - 17:50 "Into Midian/Meat for the Beast" (2:31 first part of track)
18:21 - 19:44 ** Boone Meets Peloquin and Kinski" ** (1:23)
19:44 - 21:55 "Into Midian/Meat for the Beast" (2:11 second part of track)
22:54 - 24:00 "Resurrection Suite" (1:06 first part of track)
24:53 - 25:17 ** source music, country instrumental ** (0:24)
25:27 - 25:35 ** source music, country instrumental ** (0:07)
25:43 - 27:33 "Resurrection Suite" (1:49 third part of track; second part not in film)
27:33 - 28:50 ** source music, country instrumental ** (1:17)
29:44 - 32:34 "The Initiation" (2:50)

Looking forward to this. No two ways about it.

The heights of opportunity for Barker and Elfman at that point in their careers.
